Worse even, i'd say, but I was jut wondering why it said reddit link when it's not a reddit link.

[-] ImplyingImplications@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

OP edited their post. It was originally a link to Reddit.

This is a really funny joke, but with global population decline in first world countries this is going to be a big issue. Incentivizing people to care for a world they're not going to be around for is going to be fun

[-] ShroOmeric@lemmy.world 48 points 1 year ago

Yeah, because people with children instead are making everything they can to save the planet. Sure. Let's keep believing in fairy tales.

The most impactful single decision one can make in terms of not making things even worse is not reproducing. It is the single most sustainable decision in terms of resource use, pollution and climate change.

The fact that people are voluntarily doing this is good, the presupposed "dangers" of population decline are dangers to the systems that demand infinite endless growth, which I would argue are dangers to people in the first place. Fuck 'em.

Some maybe, but it isn't like people who have kids have that good of a track record. No reason to believe people without kids are especially probelmatic.

  1. I care about not leaving a mess simply because I don't want to leave a mess.

  2. Why would I worry about population decline?

I may be getting mixed up, but I thought that was a myth based in white supremacist tactics?

Edit: this was a genuine question, not bad faith. Like I said, I get things mixed up sometimes. I really appreciate those who provided meaningful answers. Thx.

Wealthy countries generally do have a decline in birth rates.

There is a lot of fearmomgering and a lot of added lies to it from far right people though.

More education = less kids, well documented

[-] fed0sine@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

It's the entire basis of the excellent (and accurate) documentary called Idiocracy.

[-] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

Shut up, I'm 'baitin

[-] GBU_28@lemm.ee 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It is not. More education, more freedom for women to choose a life path, less kids. In some places overwhelming work culture forces this to extreme, where folks focused on career don't feel they can pursue creating a family at all.

Supremacists often tout "replacement theory" which is fake. It claims there is a conspiracy to actively flip demographics with "immigrants" (read, generally folks who aren't of their ethic group) to devalue their position in their society. In reality demographic makeup is naturally dynamic and no one is out to get them, people of all ethnicities are just living their lives.

These assholes are all over the world

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_total_fertility_rate#Country_ranking_by_most_recent_year

Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, China, Ukraine, Thailand, Spain, Japan.... Are the countries with the lowest birth rate right now. Not exactly centered around "white supremacist" hot spots.

when things get too real for me_irl

For relatable posts that are too real for !me_irl. Meaning jokes/posts about mental health issues and self deprecating humour.

This is a subreddit for memes that hit too close to home or are too real for communities like !me_irl

If you have depression, talk to a therapist, it really does help. You are not alone, and recovery is possible and worth it.

If you find jokes about suicide, depression or self harm upsetting, this sub might not be the right place for you. This is a place for people who use self deprecating humor as a coping mechanism, not for those making fun of mental illness.

With that out of the way, the rules are as follows:
