We are. Most big discoveries in most fields that study the past are being made by understanding of DNA. we know now that humans didn't come to the Americas walking, they came at a time when the baring srait was still blocked by glaciers from what is now Mongolia, we also know they lived very close to the glaciers for many years. It's not known how exactly they came, but costal canoes are one possibly.

We're also discovering species we only know of from dna information, we're getting more accurate time estimates of fossils from DNA comparisons,

If you pay a lot of attention in these areas it really does feel like we're reading source code.
