Personally, I'm a huge fan of Hollow Knight, Ori and the (Blind Forest/Will of the Wisps), and Kingdom Hearts. Orchestral soundtracks are just something else...

One that I love (in addition to Ori and Hollow Knight) is Spiritfarer. Beautiful all the way through with lovely orchestration and colorful melodies.

Halo (of course), Deus Ex, Cyberpunk 2077, Doom, Elder Scrolls, the Sega Genesis Sonic games, Psychonauts, Super Mario, Mirror's Edge, hell, I never really thought about it before but there is a lot of good stuff out there.

I have so many favorites, Ori soundtracks are amazing, Kingdom Hearts, Genshin Impact, Minecraft

For more lighthearted yet genius silliness though: Part Time UFO

Not really a game but a visual Novel everyone needs to read and listen to: Umineko

Vanilla WoW, Celeste, and Mirrors Edge all makes me feel like when I played the games for the first time as soon as I hear them. Fantastic evocative soundtrack.

[-] 2deck@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

Kingdom hearts had some amazing original pieces and spins on classics.

One of my fav from the piano collection; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqmBRC6IOAs&t=11

Of course Halo 1, 2 and 3 aaand sims 2.

Zelda: Twilight Princess is probably my all time favorite. Midna's theme is so delightfully haunting in its several variations.

[-] Highsight@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Far too many to list, but Final Fantasy IX's soundtrack is a tremendous work of art, and a perfect final bow for Nobuo Uematsu from the series. It's always stuck with me among nearly ever other soundtrack.

Notable Mentions (in no order):

  • Sonic 2 and 3&K
  • Hotline Miami 1 & 2
  • Street Fighter 2
  • Nier Automata
  • Castlevania (Whole Damn Series)
  • Donkey Kong Country & 2
  • Doom I & II
  • Undertale
  • Freedom Planet
  • Golden Sun 1 & 2
  • Hollow Knight
  • Skyrim
  • Kirby Series
  • Mario Series
  • MegaMan 2 & 3 (Shout-out to The Megas)
  • Super Meat Boy

And so many others, but I'll be here all day if I keep going.

Jake Kaufman always does amazing work, here's some of my favorites of his from the Shantae series: https://youtu.be/ovk4ygEzMCI
https://youtu.be/3OhJnSL4XWA
https://youtu.be/MZ7bCDjif9M
https://youtu.be/6wJmVxvJTEs

Cave Story has some great retro tracks. Some people prefer the originals but I played it with the arranged versions: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLr5fTLogAd5tW_oPORRtgznxL-kUt9z7h

Little known PC game called Chenso Club has a pumping soundtrack by Knasibas: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nHBZFT82t4__lHXCD8bi3WhA98hQaSGuo&feature=share

[-] EnigmaNL@feddit.nl 3 points 1 year ago

There are so many :)

  • Diablo 1 and 2
  • Warcraft 2 and 3
  • Starcraft 1
  • Legend of Zelda (most of them anyway)
  • Red Alert 1 & 2
  • Tiberian Sun
  • Doom 2016
  • Oblivion and Skyrim
  • Fallout 3 and New Vegas
[-] BearclawHammerfist@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

The Metal Gear Solid series, particularly Snake Eater.

It's just so dramatic and over the top like the rest of the game.

They even wisely use it as a pallet cleanser after fighting The End and you have to climb that long ass ladder.

  • Super Metroid
  • Every. Single. Mega Man. Game. (as the kids say: so many bangers)
  • Killer Instinct
  • The Zelda franchise
  • Dead Cells
  • Celeste
  • Bloodstained ROTN
  • The Castlevania franchise
  • Hollow Knight
  • Nier: Automata

Sorry, it's early here, I can't think of any more.

All three Splatoon games have really solid OSTs. I am also a huge fan of Hollow Knight. Deep Rock Galactic is amazing as well.

I love so many OSTs. They really make a game/movie/show

[-] NightmareQueenJune@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

I think my absolute favorite that I haven't seen here is Gris. This game is absolutely beautiful as is the OST.

[-] AverageGoob@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Death Stranding hands down for me!

[-] thorcik@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Heh, just a few on the go: Witcher 3 Cyberpunk 2077 Divinity: Original Sin 2 ("Sing for me" 🥰) Battlefield 1 and V Hi-Fi Rush

[-] Thavron@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

The first Fable game has such an amazing soundtrack. Every one of those tunes is etched into my brain. They capture the feeling of the areas they play in so well.

[-] cyberop5@fedia.io 2 points 1 year ago

Divinity Original Sin 2 is my go-to.

Really anything by Grant Kirkhope, Banjo Kazooie Yooka Laylee, etc, and on the Rare train, Donkey Kong Country 2 had great music.

Also love the Undertale soundtrack.

[-] Zagaroth@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

Final Fantasy XIV is my singular favorite, but given all its expansions that might be cheating a touch. ;) The Final Fantasy series in general tends to have great music.

Nier series, chrono trigger, Skyrim, and there are a lot of others I've liked as well, but I think that covers all my favorites. :)

[-] ColdFenix@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 year ago

Nier Automata/Replicant and Metal Gear Rising are my favourite soundtracks if not music in general. The Nier soundtrack is so emotional, especially when you know the story behind the songs, while the Metal Gear Rising Soundtrack is basically just pure adrenaline.

[-] ott@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

-Hardspace: Shipbreaker -Risk of Rain 2 -Gran Turismo (literally all of them, but 4 is a classic) -Super Mario Galaxy 1&2 -Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies

[-] llIIIlIlIIIIlIIl@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Soundtracks filled front-to-back with bangers that have stuck with me over the years:

Sonic Mayhem's Quake 2 -- and, of course, Trent Reznor's Quake. 植松 伸夫 -- Final Fantasy 7. Grant Kirkhope/Graeme Norgate's GoldenEye 64. Max Lichtenstein's Pax Imperia 2. Richard Joseph's Chaos Engine. Just about anything Mick Gordon touches. ...aaaaand just about every Mario, Metroid, Sonic, DOOM (Heretic included), Command and Conquer, Advance Wars...

[-] rubii@lm.inu.is 2 points 1 year ago

Oh man, quite a few actually:

  • Dusk
  • Most of the Command and Conquer games
  • Simcity 4
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Touhou
  • Nier Automata

I could go on but i wanna keep this somewhat brief lol

[-] lamarre08@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

For me it has to be a mix of doom 2016 the witcher 3 and chrono trigger. So many good soundtracks between them.

[-] telnetta@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

idk if this counts as an "OST" but the New Vegas soundtrack like changed my life lol. the vibes set by those choice cuts of big band/swing from the era just added a level of immersion and comfort I didn't even know existed.

[-] plumbercraic 2 points 1 year ago

The Maxis Sim City game has a great OST from Chris Tilton. Quite partial to Riven and Hotline Miami too.

Honourable mention for Bastion too. And sometime I like the This War of Mine acoustic guitar stuff.

[-] donio@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

In most games I turn off the music pretty quickly so the ones where I don't must be my favorites.

  • Heroes of the Storm. Great originals and lots of reworks of favorites from other Blizzard games. I must admit that I turned it off eventually because I play better without music but I've listened to those tunes for hundreds of hours over the years.

  • Crypt of the Necrodancer, which is a good thing since it's a rhythm game :)

  • The Isaac and VVVVVV music fit the games really well.

  • The digital version of the Ascension deckbuilding game has some really nice art and music. My favorite is the Dreamscape stuff.

Edit, almost forgot, lots of favorites from the 8-bit home computer days (Spectrum, C64). From console games Earthbound was memorable.

[-] somefool@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

VVVVVV's Pushing Onwards is such a banger.

[-] EgoNo4@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago

Deus Ex Human Revolution & Mankind Divided

Silent Hill 1 to 4 by Akira Yamaoka. Atmospheric and dreamlike.

Shadow of the colossus by Kow Otani. Epic and mystical.

[-] SirSauceLordtheThird@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

Kenshi's soundtrack has such an amazing, surreal sound. Such a vibe, love it.

[-] shapesandstuff@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago

Can't believe someone mentioned Kenshi already :)
Such a cool game, such an amazing soundtrack

[-] Moskus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

In the beginning it was Day of the Tentacle and Transport Tycoon. For the longest time it was Red Dead Redemption 1 and then 2.

Then suddenly Desperados III came along and is so far winning.
