I’ve been searching for a potential Fediverse-based alternative to Tumblr and recently came across Loforo, Goblin, and Wafrn.

All of them seem interesting, but I’m curious — which one do you think is better for recreating that Tumblr-like experience?

Or is there another platform out there on the Fediverse that’s an even better fit as a Tumblr alternative?

I know there’s been talk about Tumblr supposedly joining the Fediverse, but even if it does, I don’t feel comfortable relying on a centralized, corporate platform anymore.

I’d prefer to support smaller, decentralized, community-driven projects.

Do you have any experience with Loforo, Wafrn, or other platforms that could work for blogging, aesthetic sharing, and building micro-communities like Tumblr?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Similar situation to Irelephant, first I'm reading about Loforo. Doing some brief research, it doesn't look like Loforo's integrated ActivityPub that much, nor does it seem to be open source so others could run their own instances.

In those respects Wafrn is the clear choice for a federated Tumblr-like, as it's open source and integrates ActivityPub thoroughly. As a matter of fact, a little more digging and I found where someone has been helping test run another Wafrn instance in the form of "evil" Wafrn.

I just checked Evil Wafrn, and now I'm confused.

What is the difference between Wafrn, and "Evil Wafrn"?

is it just a different Wafrn instance?

Is it a completely different and separate Fediverse platform?

I attempted to log into "Evil Wafrn" using my regular Wafrn login and that failed.

It's just a different Wafrn instance, which is why you couldn't log into it.

As far as I'm aware it's the first and only other Wafrn instance run by someone besides the creator of Wafrn. Hopefully in time there may be more.

Ahh... Thx.

Wafrn is great, haven't heard of loforo yet though.

Tumblr has downsized to 25 people, so don't expect anything from them anytime soon.

@Teknevra goblin.band can also be classified as one of these projects.

Thank you very much.

None of these projects are made by companies. They are made by individuals or small groups, and although they know how to code, they usually know nothing about marketing. That is why they are small compared to Threads or Bluesky. Marketing expertise, or lack thereof.

This was supposed to be a reply to a different post, but it wasn't attached somehow.

Could they have chosen worse names?

I don't understand why company names have turned to shit since like 2000. It's now indistinguishable from facerolling a keyboard.
