I've played the original multiple times but barely touched the main story because I didn't like the whole "gates to oblivion" aspect. The guilds and side quests were nice though.

My last playthrough I made it a point to close any gate I came across, as I also imposed a no fast-travel rule on myself.
After you close like ten of them they just start reopening. I literally watched one reopen as I walked up to it once. The sigil stones are kinda nice to have though.
They don't reopen, ever. More will spawn as you do main story quests, but none ever reopen.
I will be thrilled if they take out the stat leveling system or at least fix it. Miserable needing to min max how you level up your skills
It's not made by Bethesda so it's probably gonna be better than VI, but I'm not gonna get excited before I've tried it out.
This game defined my childhood. Guess its time to relive it.
