I actually want an iPod again. I’m sick of people interrupting my music with calls. Time for dedicated music players, they were great.

Even aside from that i genuinely think a music player still makes sense as a product.
Nowadays we could trivially make it tiny and convenient, you can fit a stupendous amount of audio on even a cheap SD card, and having it as a separate device means you're not using up the battery on your phone and you can be more flexible with connecting it to speakers and stuff.

And of course just like the ipod you can also do video, and now that we could actually put in a decent display you could actually see the fucking content.

The problem is that this gives it a very small market. Most people don't download music anymore, they want streaming

I started imagining a small portable wearable device that you could sync music to with gps etc

Accidentally invented the Apple watch lol

for all that i detest apple, their smartwatch is one of the neatest devices i know of and i dearly wish i could have an equivalent that runs android (and not the janky android wear os, i've had a watch with that and it was not appreciably better than whatever my xiaomi smart band runs).

right but like, a modern audio player should be very cheap to make, my fucking xiaomi smart watch cost 80 bucks and that would be a fair price for a device that meets my specifications above.

And many people, like me, much prefer to have their music downloaded so it's ALWAYS available, and if i could have a small handy device that can accept multiple SD cards that'd definitely be worth up to 100 dollars.

I used to have this sony bluetooth reciever that just clips onto your clothes and outputs to plug-in headphones and it was great, something like that with maybe even TWO sd card slots and ample battery life would be amazing. Then just let me connect it to the phone to manage playlists and stuff and we're golden.

Or, you know, do what apple is doing, which honestly seems more and more genius the more i think about this.. I don't like when apple is objectively innovative.. Also fuck patenting it, i don't want it to be legally impossible for other companies to make the same thing, fuck off apple.

I don't disagree! I also prefer offline music.

I'd just imagine it's a hard sell to mass manufacture

Check this out then. It's a fully open source repairable ipod-ish media player.

That's cool!

That's so true. I hate that idiot that thought it was a great idea to combine a phone with an music player 😅

But it is great for most people. Less item to charge. when they removed the headphone jack from all phones I call it enshitification since that means I have to buy a stupid bluetooth earphone.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago

even that isn't really relevant at all for most people, modern bluetooth earphones are quite good and one charge lasts more than a week if you don't use them constantly, as they recharge in the case.

Steve Jobs gets resurrected and goes back to the company.

"What are we working on?"

"iPhone 29 and basically an iPod again"

Steve Jobs dies again immediately.

can we make this a regular event every 5 years?
