A very long time.
Not sure that's ever going to happen. Just like the US, each member state is very culturally different. It wouldn't make much sense for Sweden and Spain to be part of the same country, since their values and needs are so different.
The EU is fine as it is and does a good job as it currently is. I wouldn't mind an expansion of a common EU military, but that doesn't necesarily bring it much closer to a unified country.
