There are a few versions of “pick up card” responses that require the merchant to hold on to the card and contact the issuing bank. I’m not sure if a bank would instruct them to destroy it, probably more likely they’d ask the merchant to hold on to it until law enforcement showed up.

I never personally encountered the CUT CARD message while I worked retail, but my understanding was there was actually a bounty given when you did this. That is a level above just "declined", of course. Don't know what the situation is these days.

Sounds like a dumbass thing. Who the hell cuts a credit card in half that may or may not have failed due to network errors of the card reader?
