If only more of today's rich people were classy enough to spend their time making life-size stone sculptures of dying elephants instead of whatever it is they do instead.

Is Jansson romanticizing the "starving artist" trope here, or meta-commenting on it?

OMG I didn't even think of that. At this point in her career she was basically making ends meet for the first time ever.
