I’ve been thinking about getting the tablet once it releases, but I’m curious about what others are thinking and what their use cases are going to be. So, who’s buying it? And if so, why?

I was considering it ngl, but the 60hz screen is a deal-breaker for me.

Excuse me? It’s only 60hz? Who would release a flagship product with a 60hz screen in 2023. Sad.

[-] rjsr@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

uh, it's not a "flagship", is it? It's like, a budget combo tablet + smart hub.

[-] Sjvo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

That's a completely fair deal-breaker. I think I'm going to check it out once it releases and see if it feels smooth for a 60hz screen. Although, hopefully the future iterations bump up that refresh rate to 90hz or 120hz.

Yeah hopefully, because it would be quite hard to compete with other options with many people being used to 90+Hz these days. Hell, 60Hz on a phone looks bad to me now.

They really screwed up on the hub part. If the hub could have audio cast to it while undocked I would've bought it in a heart beat but having to have the tablet docked to it to make it work kills the whole thing.

I ordered. Should ship any day I suppose.

[-] Sjvo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

That's exciting! Out of curiosity, what got you over the line to purchase it?

I like my P7P and I'm replacing a galaxy tab 6

It looks great, I'd be interested if I didn't already own an ipad + magic keyboard. I do like the dock feature a lot

I have one, and I think it's pretty good. Having an android tablet is convenient for video and reading, and the stand is good for keeping it upright if I'm reading programming books and want to have my hands free for typing.

My only problem so far has been the fingerprint reader. I'm not sure if it's a software issue or just a dirty read, but it's very hard to get a proper read of my finger. Hopefully a software patch will fix it so that the reader isn't so picky.

I'd like to see another revision of the tablet, and it sold without the dock. Hoping Google stays in the tablet game this time.

I am. In fact, just a few minutes ago my credit card got charged for the tablet. Seems like they are going to be on time with dispatching them.

It's gonna replace my Surface Pro 3 for everyday use.

I am thinking about it, but it is unlikely. I have a Samsung Galaxy s6 lite that works 'fine'. I really can't justify the expense of the Pixel tablet at this time. I like the docking stand, it should have happened a long time ago. Lenovo had something like this 5 years ago, but the tablet was really under-powered. I'm going to wait and see what real world reviews say to see if it is powerful enough. The other thing I would want from it is a keyboard case so that I can take it on family vacations instead of my laptop.

[-] mook71@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Same, but I got rid of my s22u for the P7P and just want to keep it in the family

[-] Sjvo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I think seeing the real-world reviews will make-or-break the decision for me. Definitely hoping it's successful enough so that Google can justify making future iterations but I don't think I'll buy one for that reason. I think adding a first-party keyboard for cases like you just mentioned though would definitely help make that decision for me too.

I think one of the biggest reasons that iPads have been so successful is the accessory market. They are usually high quality. Accessories for Android tablets have always been "universal" and universally crap quality. If Google can get some high quality keyboards and cases it will help draw buyers. And things like the Square kiosk.

The iOS/Apple ecosystem is pretty tight too. I wish the Google ecosystem was better. I never know if it is worth committing when they might kill off an app/site.

I got the Lenovo smart screen when it came out and found it to be sub-par. I already have Amazon music, so don't want Google music or YouTube music. If they had a better package deal for music movies and books, then maybe. Never bothered with the Google Hub for that reason. I got the small speaker for free and found it useless.

All that said, I love the Nexus and Pixel phones I've had, love the Pixel Buds, and recently got a Pixel watch. So the tablet is a solid maybe. Especially after how quickly the Nexus 7 tablet became bogged down.

I completely agree. Although they may not be marketing the tablet as a productivity device, I think many people (including myself) will still use it for light tasks while travelling or heading away for a long-weekend due to its portability. So at least providing people the option to purchase high-quality accessories would be great imo.

Seeing as the majority of those devices have gone on sale fairly quickly after launch, im hoping the same happens with the tablet, would make it pretty enticing for me tbh.

Overall, I'm keen to see what's to come. I'll post an update to this community (sub-Lemmy??) if I end up biting the bullet and getting the tablet around its release.

I bought one! It's a pretty decent tablet, but not a super great smart display. I wish the hub mode screensaver showed more info, like upcoming calendar events. All it shows is the weather and time though. :(

I did recently watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXvTzBlsVD4 where they put the tablet in kiosk mode, which is closer to what I'm dreaming about, so that's promising.

At the end of the day, it's a full tablet, so I'm guessing I could make my own custom dashboard for it!

My wife has been using it a lot for timers and streaming movies in the kitchen while cooking.
