Who are we?

We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

We are one. We are legion. And we're trying really hard not to forget.

Looking to build a collection that I just outright own, so any streaming platform that doesn't allow me to download the raw files is a no go. Other than the big players (Amazon, Walmart, etc.) what are some good sources for buying?

A big under rated source is your local library. Mine has a few hundred dvds and blu-rays and they add a few more every month.

Not quite what you're looking for, but playon tv essentially lets you DVR content from streaming services you pay for. The big caveat I've had with it is only the default language is allowed. There's a manual way to select another language before it starts recording but that doesn't scale, as you'd have to do it per episode.

If pirating is off the table for any reason, it's a great alternative to load up on entire seasons at a time of content, which can be annoying with disks.

I ripped like 40 dvds for the office once. Not fun.

I buy DVD/Blu-Ray collections and rip them. Facebook marketplace (the only thing I would ever think of using FB for, and obviously in a containered browser, etc), OfferUp, EBay, etc make it more affordable, and also really make me realize how little I want to bother having a copy of.

I am not aware of any reputated place where drm-free raw file downloading of the movies/shows you bought is possible. The best and easy way is ripping your dvds and blurays
