Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Cypriot communists have issued a warning...

Snip:

The opposition in Cyprus has recently warned that Israel is establishing a “backyard” in the EU island nation, in response to increasing property acquisitions in the country by Israeli investors.

“Israeli buyers are purchasing significant land parcels and strategic economic assets,” spokesperson for the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL), Stefanos Stefanou, said in June. “They are building Zionist schools, synagogues, gated enclaves … Israel is preparing a backyard in Cyprus, and this cannot but sound the alarm for us.”

“Israeli newspapers speak of a targeted policy of expansion of Israel in Cyprus,” he said. “We do not say that out of xenophobia or antisemitism,” he added, stressing that “Israel is occupying us.”

He noted that Israel has bought large quantities of land and is establishing gated communities, predominantly in Larnaca and Limassol. “These are not just holiday homes. These are settlements in all but name.”

Isn't this basically how it started in Palestine?

[–] lilypad@hexbear.net 29 points 10 months ago

It was one of the tactics used. Buy land -> learn to work land from locals -> evict locals.

[–] Formerlyfarman@hexbear.net 20 points 10 months ago

Yes, but not really, by 1948, Jews only owned a majority of the land in 2 districts near Haifa, and a plurality by a small margin in 2 other districts. The buy land policy was not successful at all, most of what they got they did due to the partition, international interference.

They know their time in Palestine is over and they're already setting the stage for another occupation

Israeli newspapers speak of a targeted policy of expansion of Israel in Cyprus

Do we have examples of this?

Not because I disbelieve it but being able to show it would be nice.

There are several problems with touching this topic as a leftist, obviously Israel already demonstrates being a settler colony but libs are gonna get extremely uncomfortable with the idea that they might be doing it again, it will give them heebiejeebies and they will call it "leftist great replacement". If they make that association in their minds it will set them right back to "leftists are antisemitic".

A strong body of evidence is required demonstrating who and why it's being done or we will all have a very hard time with this. Obviously if the parcels are large then it's millionaires doing it, who?

they're literally taking land from syria now that who-must-go lost his magical shield.

i'm unfamiliar with them going after cyprus or bragging about it specifically, but they're definitely expansionist and if a lib denies that they're not worth your time.

Gave it a look and found these, not smoking guns but adds to the case:

https://archive.is/lyMUG "The Second Israel? Israelis Are Streaming Into Cyprus to Buy Anything in Sight" Haaretz

https://www.jewishpress.com/news/israel/couple-organizing-haredi-settlement-in-cyprus-talmud-says-its-part-of-eretz-yisrael/2023/01/02/

Couldn't get an archive link on the last one because the site is being a shitter.

If I was cypriot this would put the fear of god in me. At the very least they look like they are getting a parasitic rentier class

Get fucked accepting blood money. At least you're getting paid for it.

[–] CutieBootieTootie@hexbear.net 44 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Where does that logic lead? It's not like working class people get a say when their landlords sell to colonizing firms

[–] stink@lemmygrad.ml 20 points 10 months ago

Yeah you're right, I'm a salty little POS, sorry!
