Tldr: It's the tournament format and personal rivalries.

At its core, before throne grabs or inventive fatalities, Mortal Kombat has always been about engaging in personal rivalries, and tournaments are fantastic ways to frame them.

1995’s Mortal Kombat understood this, and that’s what makes it a great movie, even 30 years later.

Just watched it recently as an adult. Even though it’s really cheesy, it was still very much entertaining. I remember being a kid waiting in a long line to watch this movie.

I saw it as a kid. 30 years later the soundtrack is the one thing I still remember fondly.

Im not sure in what way they are using the term great as the context clues do not fit any definition of it that I know.

I saw one video a while back, Screen Junkies?, that pointed out it's basically a remake of Enter The Dragon.

I still think it's one of the best movie adaptations of a game.
