Overview:

The community dedicated to boycotting the US until they stop fascism, restore full democracy and start following international law.

Americans have a moral obligation to resist Donald Trump and project 2025 at every turn.

America is a flawed democracy currently being ruled by oligarchs. Stop the backslide! Dont let America become the next Hungary.

America needs to challenge the court rulings of citizens united v. fec and shelby county v. holder, protect the media, implement independent district drawing, and the single transferable vote so they don't end up having people stay home in life-changing elections because they cannot vote for their favourite candidate.

In Canada we used to talk about brain drain. Skilled Canadians leaving to the US for cheaper goods and taxes. How times have changed.

Ontario universities and schools have had repeated funding cuts by premier Doug Ford. We are in a horrible position to be on the receiving end of any brain drain. Some universities are struggling to even stay open despite record overenrollment.

Huh. Who could have predicted this? If you vilify an entire ethnic group for the better part of a decade, blaming it for everything up to and including sunspots, the people of that ethnic group will start to think they're unwelcome and move away.

There was absolutely no way to have predicted this.

[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Sunspots? Really? I hadn't heard about that one. Jfc.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 16 points 6 months ago (1 children)

(This is a form of comedic writing called "hyperbole". They didn't actually get accused of causing sunspots. It's just an exaggeration of how they get blamed for everything, like apparently how Brazilian farmers are "coerced" by China into buying cheaper, higher-quality, not-locked-down tractors instead of American rent-seeking pieces of shit like John Deere.)

Ah. Well, we've gotten to the point where I'm no longer able to discern the difference between reality and satire. I really wouldn't have been surprised if our current administration had made that accusation. Disappointed? I guess, but it would have been par for the course at this point.

I know, right? We've reached the point where I can't tell the difference between reality and The Beaverton. Like which of these are satire?

  • Carney hoping Canadians too busy applying for jobs to notice skyrocketing unemployment numbers
  • Carney cancels invite for Project 2025 mastermind, wants fascist takeover of Canada to be more of a surprise
  • SNL casts Canadian provided she can evade ICE at border
  • Employee appreciation lunch features cheapest food possible
  • Mark Carney celebrates Labour Day by ordering labourers back to work

Any one of those could be mistaken for reality these days.

remember the last time this happened during the cold war, it resulted in china achieving fission-fusion hydrogen bombs faster than any other country in a short amount of time. the red scare, scared away a nuclear scientist to the ccp.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 months ago

Not so much scared away but deported, right?

[–] TheObviousSolution@lemmy.ca 14 points 6 months ago

Why stay in the US when it's sliding towards being an even worse fascist state than China is?

Unrelated but why is the South China Morning Post asking me for money. I'd assume an English language Chinese newspaper exists solely for propaganda purposes. Is there a market for this in the West?

EDIT: It's Hong Kong based, that's why it's so weird.

[–] kossa@feddit.org 8 points 6 months ago (1 children)

It is really weird, but US based newspapers ask me for money as well, even though I am in Europe. I assumed those newspapers exist solely for propagande purposes. It is weird, but maybe it is to remain inconspicuous.

[–] Tenderizer@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 months ago

Yeah, I get your point. But would a US-based Chinese-language newspaper ask for money?

[–] ComradePedro@lemmy.ml 4 points 6 months ago (3 children)

Is it known that everything from China is see see pee propaganda

[–] Zomg@piefed.world 3 points 6 months ago

Who doesn't like to see some pee pee from time to time?

[–] Tenderizer@lemmy.ca 0 points 6 months ago (1 children)

The operative word is "English". An English language newspaper from China would be.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Just so you know, this is you being a little racist.

[–] Tenderizer@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 months ago

I guess a little, I shouldn't have assumed all people with family connections in China would speak Chinese as their first language. And I completely forgot about Hong Kong which has (or had, IDK) a significant English-speaking population.

Shame it's paywalled. I'd be curious to know the details.
