Am I mistaken than MLM is basically just a rebranded term for pyramid scheme anyway? 

MLM and pyramid scheme are synonyms

The most blatant pyramid doesn't really sell a product, the con runners are just trying to get people to pay to join it.

MLMs can theoretically function as well as any other form of capitalist grift if the runners are actually interested in just running a direct sales business, but that theoretically is doing a lot of lifting and mostly just functions to give a smokescreen to the conmen.
