Live Valve/Gaben reaction :

We designed this to be an open platform so that people can take steam os and do whatever they want with it.
After all, once they have the device, they'll be getting the games from us anyway.
We find that it's easier just to give people the tools, and then they can make us money. It worked with steam, TF2 workshop, and it will work with steam os and steam deck competitors. We sell out of whatever we make pretty quick anyway, so I don't care.
I'm going scuba diving now

EDIT 🤔 I wonder why it didn't work for Source/hammer/SFM(except for porn)/etc? Is it because hammer sucks balls?

Source engine isn't open source.

how ironic. Is that why people don't use it for game dev?

s&ndbox is based off source 2, editor doesn't work on linux, should be able to export and release games through it anywhere

I mean, it DID work with Source/hammer. They're two parts of the same package. And a good number of games used a licensed Source engine.

VtmB is an early but jank example. Apex Legends is a modern, successful one. https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/List_of_third-party_Source_games

Good points. I highlighted hammer separately because I've heard lots of gripes about it specifically

My source is that I made it the fuck up ...
But it's based on things he said about the steam workshop and TF2 maps and TF2 accessories

Edit: also he said he likes scuba diving in recent interviews

Was Source ever simply a public download available for developers to use? Same with Source 2? Available to download with licensing terms/revenue share details available for everyone. API documentation. Doesn't seem like they ever made Source or Source 2 readily available to be competitive with unreal engine or unity
