I still like the F-Droid Classic very much due to the clean and slim interface. I somebody struggles with F-Droid I always recommend installing the Classic Client.

Can this client automatically update the installed apps? What advantages does the client have in detail compared to the standard F-Droid client?

F-Droid Classic can automatically download new Updates. And if it has root access, then automatic installation of these Updates should be possible. Since I have not rooted my phone I cannot confirm if this is working.

The advantage for me personally is, that the User Interface is very easy and use. This gives me time back when I am searching apps or doing manual updates.

Have you tried Droid-ify? If not, you should.
