Are you on Linux? I know that Firefox 147 has XDG Base Directory Spec support so perhaps there's something funky happening with the new location.

Yes, I am high on linux. It's the flatpak version.

macOS here. I vaguely remember there being a home profile and some kind of default profile, that was meant to be for whatever? Not really sure. Right now I just have two that I actively use. Maybe I wasn't supposed to delete the default one.

It's like two different profile settings, not 2 distinct profiles

These new profiles that can be accessed through menu are not exactly sub-profiles, but I think more like sibling-profiles forming a profile group. Profiles in the same group know about each other, so in the UI you can switch between them and I think there are some settings that can be shared between the profiles in the same group.

I don't know of any plans to deprecate the old profile system, nor about:profiles for managing them.
