I guess they can just not participate?

The problem is the criminal liability if the gov doesn’t roll back the OIC’s or extend the amnesty. If I recall correctly they legally can’t just unprohibit firearms, some clause in a bill from a previous administration, they need to revoke the OIC’s starting from 2020.

So the real problem comes when those who chose not to participate face more strict consequences for not participating?

Possession of a prohibited device can legally land you in a 10 year imprisonment however, we all know our prisons are not nearly big enough to hold ~300,000 new criminals so I suspect if people are caught with these prohibited firearms they’ll strip your PAL/RPAL and throw you on probation/house-arrest.

Still, making thousands of people criminals from something they had legally purchased is not a good rep.

I’m with you. Different initial approaches aside, seems like a missed opportunity to not have a predetermined set of escalations.

Good. Why should i sell my gun?

[–] digitalFatteh@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Exactly. This does nothing to curb illegal guns in the wrong hands. The whole buyback program is just virtue signalling to say “look we’re taking guns of the streets”. But they are not.

Its more a Thread. If you dont sell your guns, next step ist confiscation without Money.

Aye, I’ve heard that one too. Confiscation and the more recent. “Illegally owning a firearm could result in fines and prison terms at federal level”. I imagine the first test case is going to be a doosey.

Can anyone here justify owning the guns the government is buying back?

When it’s effecting Olympic & IPSC sport shooting I would argue and say yes, there are reasons to own these firearms.

There is also varmint control, most people opt for semi-auto .22lr rifles which the majority have been banned.

If our government’s Wildlife Conservation Officers believe the use semi-automatic rifles is the best choice for wildlife/grizzly defence, why can’t we have access to the same tools?

And ultimately these are not weapons of warfare otherwise why would they be legal to purchase for the last 30 years, NATO rejected sending these firearms to Ukraine and our public safety minister blatantly admitted that this program was for political points in Quebec in that leaked audio.
