I came across this neat visualisation of the Fediverse - There we are on the left - a slightly bigger dot among the galaxy of tiny dots :)

Most of the surface area of our dot is the Melbourne daily thread I think

I don't think so. On comment counts, aussie.zone makes the top ten instances some weeks. I think these dots are post counts.

If you look here Melbourne is the 39th largest community on Lemmy when ranked by comments

Thats pretty massive. But that daily thread goes off.

Why does Melbourne seem to be more active than the other communities? And it has been the Great Rexodus. Did a load of people from Reddit Melbourne decide to move over together?

I think that's the case, I know the moderators of r/Brisbane tried to move people over here as well, however it doesn't seem like they've stuck around as much as Melbourne has. They must have just had the right number of optimistic people to start the daily thread and keep it going. I remember before they introduced the bot people were so keen on it that if there wasn't a daily thread there they'd create it themselves, I think once there was even a double-up on the daily thread.

Haha, i remember seeing how keen the community was for it. When Melbourne was ramping up it was pretty cool to see how excited everybody in the comments were/still are, although i'm not going over and looking as often.
