Restricting sales to Russia on everything but weapons systems seems like an outgrowth of US imperialism.
Sort of like how we sold Iran and Iraq weapons to perpetuate their own mutual annihilation back under Reagan.
These are US imperial policies. The annihilation of Eastern Europe through continuous pogroms and border wars is a direct result of US foreign interventions. We're out there destabilizing whole continents for self-enrichment.

Many liberals might be naive reformists who think the system can be fixed or that harm reduction is a useful long term tactic, but they often still align with leftist values and oppose fascism.

I have no issues with communism or communists, as we at the very least we agree on the problem even if we disagree on the best solution. Hell, communism can absolutely work in the right situation: I'm not sure Marx had Free and Open Source Software in mind when he wrote his manifesto, but they can have that win.
