Even if you don't use it, if anyone who has your number uses truecaller then your number, profession, and social graph etc will be recorded and shown to other users.

Let's fight back by unlisting our numbers from truecaller.

Bitcoin showed us the way. Privacy completes it.

I recently unlisted my number. I hate TC as well, they have dark patterns everywhere. They are so fishy. They keep pushing the premium version on you and the number of *adverts *they show on the free version is unbearable.

Where's the evidence for this though?

Not disagreeing with you, just curious.

Truecaller always seemed very fishy to me anyways. I live in a country where most people use Truecaller— even businesses. This makes it difficult for me to quit Truecaller altogether, and it pisses me off.

Yes I’ll just enter my mobile number into this random companies forum that I’ve never heard of before and looks totally legit

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 11 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Can we enter every number?

Looks like you need access verify the phone number is yours to unlist unfortunately

Despite being a product I've never heard of before either, apparently tens of millions of people have installed it from the Google Play Store.

Most likely, they're getting that info from data aggregators/resellers. Telling them to delete your number is just treating the symptom

In my country (France) spam caller must use some index phone number to call us.

I got 10 call a week till I blocked theses index nimber. And now... Almost 1 spam call per month.

On my parents IPhone I put 'begone' to manage the spam list.

I’ll be the unpopular person here to say that I actually use Truecaller. Without it I am bombarded with about 10 spam calls a day. I have set it up and it automatically hangs up all spam.

I have made my name a slightly obfuscated version of my real name (just initials), and honestly I do get a lot of benefit from the app.

I did that too initially. In my case, (probably yours too) truecaller is the reason why I get so many spam calls.

Ever since I installed it they increased from one per week to 5-10 a day. I have evidence that truecaller has sold my contact to call centers. I created an email and registered truecaller with it and used it for literally nothing else. I started getting spam shortly after.

And the number that I didn't give truecaller doesn't even get one spam call.

Changing your display name doesn't do anything. They have your real name from your social graph.

The only way to hurt their business is to unlist your number. If lots of people do that it'll become useless and more people will uninstall it.

Btw you can report spam calls to telecom regulators (govt). That's when I stopped getting them permanently.

How did you get that evidence?

[–] silly_goose@lemmy.today 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I explained it in the comment.

tldr: I created an email id and gave it to only truecaller and then started getting spam emails. I mentioned a few more things too.

Oh wow. Ok. So I’m pretty screwed until I change numbers then?
