Wildfire Games has released 0 A.D 28 “Boiorix”, a new version of the free, open-source real-time strategy game of ancient warfare. With one very important detail. 0 A.D. has been in public development since the early 2010s with numbered alpha versions. Now, for the first time in 16 years, with release 28, the team has dropped the “Alpha” label entirely.

Another major highlight of this release is the addition of a new playable faction: the Germans. This semi-nomadic group includes the Cimbri and Teutones, and features a flexible economy with supply wagons and fortified wagon camps.

I expected alpha becoming beta, but the download has no such label at all. Is it considered stable now?

Their news doesn't say much about the drop of and about the new status either.

The Release 28 is our first release without the Alpha label: our development process has matured, our releases are more frequent, and our commitment to quality has never been higher.

Just re-downloaded it today. Love the game but never have the time to game anymore.

Btw, I was thinking about contributing an exploring the source but they use SVN for version management! Yikes!

Holy I haven't heard that name in 15 years

So damn, freaking cool!!! What better and awesome way to quietly make the world a better place than sticking to a free and open source game that celebrates history in glorious battles for years and years and years... slowly making it better and better.

This is why software is so exciting, all that effort isn't going to disappear into a long lost abandonware game when the company goes out of business, this is an idea that has just hit critical momentum and it can't be stopped now!

Open Source Rules!

(also materially support Developers who make magic and gift it to us!)

Do they know that there’s no such thing as a year 0 AD?

Which is why they thought it would be cool to name the game that.
