tl;dr: The author seems to think that the problem with Mozilla's translation ml is that it's "built on large-scale piracy" and has written a hit piece which goes on about that at great length and crossposted it all over the place. Whether or not you think that's an actual problem, it's not relevant to privacy or linux.

Sure, Mozilla sucks and is pissing away its fortune chasing "AI" dreams. We know. It's still hard to imagine who's the target audience for this kind of unhinged rant about it.

I'd be curious to know what you think the problem with the ml is? Nothing, or just that it isn't as good as the online services?

PS: Mozilla themselves argue that this on-device translator is good for privacy. Just sayin'.

I don't give a damn about "piracy" but when it comes to llms in general I'm a lot more worried about this kind of thing for example. I'm not sure whether or not there's anything really dangerous about their translation tool specifically, I've not used it — mostly because it just doesn't work for some reason in my somewhat hardened version of firefox.
