As an avid Japanese learner, I always wanted there to be a simple online trainer for learning kana, kanji and vocabulary by JLPT level. The app serves as a simpler alternative to Chase Colburn's Kanji Study app, because Kanji Study was pretty complicated for me to use as a beginner and didn't have a more streamlined way of learning kanji through simple, continuous repetition and rote memorization (also, Kanji Study requires you to pay to unlock its full content library).

So, I started working on a brand new, completely free and fully open-source app in recent months. It's very new and still in its infant stages, but here are the features so far:

Full JLPT vocabulary and kanji coverage, with more than 1000+ levels for you to play
More than 25+ different fonts and font styles
More than 100+ different color themes, with the ability to add and upload your own custom backgrounds
100% free and open-source, forever
All learning materials 100% AI-free, sourced from reputable sources and available for full download and inspection

I’ll definitely give this a try, hoping it works for both Windows and Linux. This could potentially become a great mobile app that could challenge Duolingo. As a teenager, I lost my ability to speak, including Japanese and sign language. However, I managed to relearn English within a few months. Unfortunately, I never had the time to relearn Japanese until now.

This is cool and I will try it out. Where did you get the data?

I once made a very simple "service" that provides me with Kanji and word of the day (and can be integrated elsewhere with a very simple "API"), https://plexsheep.github.io/sennen/index.html

I should revisit that some time, the detail view is a bit broken on mobile. And the Furigana is hacky and sometimes wrong.

Is this project at all related to the similarly-named Kanji Dojo? . I've been using that one for a while to improve my written Japanese, and I think I'll fold yours into the mix of apps I'm using as well, looks great!

Replacing Duolingo has been tough on me 😔

This is certainly interesting for those learning Japanese. I can't see myself going to Japan sometime in the future due to what's going on over there (mainly, the MyNumber program).
