I used to listen for hours a day back in the day. I fell off listening over time because there are just so many better options that aren’t packed to the gills with misleading sensationalism and “clickbait” equivalent. They are also fully in on the sane-washing of fascists just like the rest of network TV/radio.

Your argument that it’s a lifeline in a disaster doesn’t hold much water because any old station still participates in the national emergency broadcast system.

Emergency broadcasts are one thing, but after the initial emergency alerts, just staying informed about an area-wide disaster is important too.

With something like COVID in 2020, the mobile internet stayed up, but in the 1989 quake, phone landlines and mobile phone networks went down, in many areas there was no power to watch broadcast or cable TV.

If you needed to hear news like the bridges and freeways being shut down, we were stuck with battery powered radios, which is why you should have one of those, and some fresh batteries, in your emergency kit.

For those of you who don't listen to radio, KCBS is the only 24-hour news radio station around here.

It's a lifeline of information when nothing else is working, like when the 1989 quake knocked out power and land line and mobile phone service.
