Seriously, fuck Amazon for this. Cancelled all my accounts, all my subscriptions with them.
And this is all because they felt the need to "shake things up" with MGM. Because a mismanaged IP grab purchase wasn't generating enough money so they sacked the entire leadership and replaced it with a bunch of twats whose only goal is to "leave a mark" - by axing everything pre-prod, down-marketing in-prod until it dies, and introducing "their own" shitshows that will get the axe the same way.
Who woulda thunk that embedding creative studios into the impossible enterprise grind that is Amazon etc., would result in those creative studios having no control and no usable product?

After 17 seasons, I'm not sure what else can really be done. SG-1 was cool, and it probably could have gone further, but it may be for the best it didn't. Atlantis never really took off. Universe needed more seasons.
For what it's worth: I think The Expanse counts as a tangent, since a gate opens in space in the third or fourth season. It's just one and it's not quite a stargate in the Stargate franchise sense (it has no dial). And Mass Effect for gaming, no stargates, but the mass effect/mass accelerator system serves a similar function. Tech found on Mars allows humanity to build these sort of slingshot stations that fling ships to faraway systems pretty much instantly. So they set up a network of them and you have something similar to a fixed, known stargate network. Might not be too hard on PC to mod it to make the mass accelerators into stargates.

The entire universe of Stargate has tons of stories left to tell, and while all the franchises you listed are tangentially related, they're not the same. Stargate was always about the setting and the people, it's not just "yaaay space gizmo takes us far". It's much more.

So how many seasons would you say is enough? Soap operas aside, I think the only thing with more seasons than Stargate is Star Trek, and all of those were pretty different from one another. The Walking Dead and Supernatural came close, though. I liked the 1994 Stargate movie. I liked it a lot. I never would have guessed that they'd make 17 seasons of TV off of it. I've seen all 17 and the movies and I don't think any of it was bad, just that they didn't have much else to do. Would I watch more? Oh, absolutely.
Well, now we will never now. This project also had Brad Wright and Joseph Mallozzi from the original series onboard as consultants & writers and they were apparently very excited about the new show's pitch. They could've been saying this for appearances but then they just could've just declined to join the team if they didn't like Gero's (who they know very well) vision for the future of the franchise (especially considering that they've made their own pitches before).
The main reason why Wright and Mallozzi took only "consultant" roles has to do with guilds/unions. SAG/WGA are very particular about "ensuring writers get a fair chance" meaning producers can do little writing if they're primarily producers (writers and actors can, on occasion, produce, as a way to step into the role, and producers can occasionally write, but you can't have a producer who sits in the writer's room and strongarms all writers).
And indeed it's a shame they've been rugpulled. I was so excited about the new show, and Amazon has to fumble it just to make some newcomer useless moneypit feel important for a moment.
