Could be any reason? Maybe it is like hard light? Maybe it's too hot that they jump back as general reflex? Maybe the beam damages their suit in such a way that it malfunctions?

Every time I see a meme from this Superman movie, I genuinely cannot gauge whether someone's taking the piss or it's really in the movie.
