E.T. came out in 1982. The oldest millennials would have been 2 years old. It’s a Gen-X movie. The rest of the text holds up tho.
Back in my day, kids watched movies that weren't brand new.
Signed, a millennial who watched ET as a kid.
We got em years later on cassette at Blockbuster, and we would re-rent and re-watch our favorites sometimes.
There also weren't as many movies to choose from, nor was it all available at our fingertips all the time.
And after that it would be on TV. If memory serves me right it was kind of a big deal the first time that happened.
Yep, and if I recall correctly, it usually hit cable TV first (usually HBO, I think), and then edited-for-broadcast-TV versions later.
Sure, but I have to imagine it was written with currently-alive kids in mind, not the not-yet-conceived. Now get off my lawn.
Still. It didn't even get released on VHS until 1988. It's one of the most famous movies of all time. Guaranteed many if not most millenials saw it as a kid.
Saw it, yeah. But it never really hit with me as something I identify with. I saw tons of things made before I was born, but things that came out after I was completely conscious of storytelling resonate differently.
ET doesn't do anything for me in this meme. It might as well be Elmer Fudd.
lol, funny enough I'd also identify with an Elmer Fudd reference. I grew up watching a ton of Looney Tunes in the early 90s.
While I will definitely get an Elmer Fudd reference, I won't really identify with it. It was already an outdated culture while I was growing up. It was the cartoon I watched when I didn't have other cartoons to watch.
Basically, my father would make jokes about being "vewy vewy quiet" because we were hunting "wabbits". I knew what he was talking about, and appreciated the humor, but it wasn't my humor.
Gen X: the forgotten generation
I mean, the music snobbery of acting like we weren't cool if we didn't listen to the right bands, and the slacker attitude that eventually grew into "got mine" Boomer Juniors... yeah, fuck em, worth forgetting.
it may be more accurate to refer tot them as xoomers and xennials depending on whether they were ever able to buy a house
oh no, snot doesn't approve of generation X, the horror, the heavy burden
Came out after 80, it's ours! ~a millennial
lol you were born in the 80s. As a Gen X, I was in school in the 80s. There’s a difference but I hear you.
Video rentals and cable TV, my dude
Pffffft. Speak for yourself.
It's my knees, not my back...
ACKSHUALLY, 1980 is the end of Gen X and 1981 is the beginning of millennials, the oldest of which would have been 18 in 1999.
So the oldest millennials would have been having their first birthday.
Too much ibuprofen use can lead to ulcers, please limit use to the worst days.
Source: have cancer, can't take acetaminophen or naproxen, they conflict with my meds, I can only take ibuprofen.
Also severe acute liver damage.
Generally kidney not liver for ibuprofen.
My mother died of kidney disease. No definitive cause was ever identified but her doctors theorized it might have been related to excessive use of ibuprofen earlier in her life.
Oh right I was thinking of acetaminophen.
“Worst days” may be a bit extreme, but if you find yourself needed to take pain meds very frequently, talk to your doctor about which one(s) would be best to use regularly, given any other meds or medical problems you may have. They can also often prescribe longer-acting anti-inflammatories that only need to be taken once a day instead of 2-4 times a day.
Don’t forget the original.

That's one hell of a reference!
Bullshit ET, naproxen sodium > ibuprofen and everybody knows it!
Celebrex ftw
I was a kid when it was out, and it's the first time I found a film unctuous, and I started noting product placement and so on. It ruined my childhood; this was before internet and it was advertised everywhere 24-7, signs, products, advertisements, on the news and night time shows and morning shows.
His diction has improved immeasurably
Thanks, ET
Uhhhh. I have four hernias in my spine...
would an alien still have the same moral standards that we have? if so, why?
Probably not the same but there would probably be a fair bit of overlap. Crossing huge distances to come to Earth would require a high degree of intelligence and cooperation which implies a social species. Likely that means they would have evolved to have empathy and social behaviours just like we did.
That's my guess anyway, it's a fun question to think about.
