It's not an app, it's a protocol
It's both. The article makes the distinction. The program (i refuse to call it an app) launched 25 years ago, which was also the first implementation of the protocol.
Started off interesting but apparently a paywall
Firefox has a "reader" mode and it may not work for all sites but on this one it allows you to read the whole text

I didn't get hit by the paywall when I read it. Just tried to get a paywall-free link thru the Wayback Machine, and even that DID get hit by the paywall :(
Turn of javascript and it should be ok.
