Recommending Chainsmoker Cat as a subtle hint to your oldest friend who never quit.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago

I was prepared to hate it but after the first episode, I'm interested.

Smoking is absolutely disgusting. And watching her suffer is hilarious.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 4 points 1 day ago

I thought these were the same anime because of all the edits people were making of the three characters together.

[–] blockheadjt@sh.itjust.works 21 points 2 days ago

Incorrect. Both of those depictions are leagues cuter than reality.

I have an irritatingly strong sense of smell but as long as I'm not wearing a respirator I can smell smokers from a kinda freakish distance and none could ever sneak up on me. Me saying "morning paul" the moment he enters the room while wearing a sleeping eye mask and lazing on the break room sofa weirded out the others for some time. I can still smell the mixture of knockoff marlboro and mint superslims when I close my eyes.

It also doesn't matter how hot someone is, once they are in scent range my brain replaces what my eyes are seeing with one of those smoke room podium type ash trays. Its just a side effect of super nose powers.

“How can you possibly smell me from that far away?”

inhales

I really dig both anime but one feels like a smoking commercial and the other feels like anti-smoking psa.

[–] coolcat1711@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago

This is genuinely how I tell people about both of them.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

It really do be like that. Makes you wonder wtf is going on over there with the industry.

You got a show about being lonely and bonding over smoking

A show about smoking and addiction

And another show about drugs coming

After smoking on and off for like 30 years (I started very young) in August 2023 I had the first cig in my life that tasted like completely fucking disgusting, and made me feel like sick shit, and I was so happy. My last CIG!

Congrats dude!

For me it was buying a vape, using it for a bit, and ultimately being dissatisfied with that it tasted nothing like the real thing and didn’t have the same experience.

Eventually as my sense of smell and taste came back, I was just straight up disgusted with how awful all my clothing, and living space smelled. Took every piece of clothing I had to the laundromat, clean or not, and washed everything, then deep cleaned the place and let everything air out as much as possible.

Getting my sense of taste back was really interesting. I vividly remember going to a restaurant and ordering a steak and taking a bite and it was the most delicious thing I’d ever eaten. It was like holy shit is steak always supposed to taste this good? On the flip side, when I’d go to my boss’s place he’d always stock Busch beer. I remember taking one when offered, like usual, taking a sip and spitting it out because it was so god awful tasting. It was like how the hell did I ever drink this?

I did lapse back to smoking like once a year for a few weeks (usually around the 4th of July) for a couple years after, and smoked cigars occasionally, but that stopped eventually.

Nowadays I really can’t stand the smell of cigarettes. Like I gotta be far away from it.

Very happy for you!

Must warn people against trying vapes as a tool to quit smoking, though. It has the same if not worse health risks in addition to much less research about any long-standing effects.

If the standard nicotine patch approach does not work, please consult with a proper doctor.

[–] kaklerbitmap@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It has the same if not worse health risks

That's a pretty strong claim. Source?

[–] TwilightKiddy@programming.dev -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You can start with the Wikipedia article. The problematic part here is that we have no long-term studies about vaping and even less studies about people who exclusively vape. There are plenty of studies that indicate that there is a lot of nasty stuff mixed in the aerosol that vapes produce, like this one.

Another thing is that people who are selling these are the same people who sell tobacco and they have decades of experience mudding the research field.

I in general despise vaping as it made a lot of younger people pick up nicotine and it is far more addictive when you are young.

And, well, yes, I am exaggerating with that statement, but the problem is that we don't know for certain. Substitution therapy exists, but I just can't support it when whatever you are using is wildly underresearched.

Pretty sure no legitimate nicotine vapor devices ever used or contained vitamin e.
Nor will they.
Sure, there's some unknowns in the industry, but it's been around for 20 years now. The basic forms of e liquid are all GRAS, and unless you are burning the cap out of your coil or using nonstandard ingredients, this is a much safer means of nicotine compared to smoking.
No one in their mind will say it's safe or healthy, but it's a means of lowering risk.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

People also forget about the products of the combustion of the substances in normal cigarettes, when you burn them, all that shit gets even worse (eg: some becomes tar)

[–] TwilightKiddy@programming.dev 0 points 2 days ago

legitimate

Yea, THC vapes are also illegal in most jurisdictions. People still buy and use them.

there’s some unknowns in the industry, but it’s been around for 20 years now

Yet I know of no studies that would look into health of people who are exclusively vaping across even a 5 year span. It's not "some unknowns", we barely know anything about it.

e liquid are all GRAS

This is one of the most wild takes I've heard. Something being safe to eat or put on your skin does not mean you can inhale it and expect no harm. One of the most common examples would be benzaldehyde, which is used as a food additive and in vapes, as a gas it causes irritation to respiratory passages.

The worst part is that sometimes you don't even have to specify a lot of it in the list of ingredients. You can read article 4.2.2.1 of this document, for example.

much safer means of nicotine

And nicotine patches beat both of those by a mile in this regard.

it’s a means of lowering risk

The best way of lowering the risk is using proper, well established methods for quitting smoking before resorting to something like vaping.

[–] Zorcron@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago

There are few things worse for your health than smoking cigarettes, and vaping is definitely not one of them. It’s not perfectly safe, as some people like to pretend, but if nicotine replacement therapy or meds made for quitting don’t work, e-cigs are a viable option.

I do echo your point about talking to a doctor though. A few different quitting meds can be used together and increase your chances of quitting, and the more times you try to quit, the more likely you are to succeed.

[–] Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 days ago

I believe it. Seen my mom try it 6 times. It never held more than 3-4 months. Soon she'll retire, and she's still smoking.

My dad tried less often, and also didn't succeed. Recently he switched to one of those tobacco heater things.

At least I had two bad examples from a young age, and never started.

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The main problem imo is how easy it is to buy. Imagine if they had coke for sale at the gas station. It's impossible to quit if you have an easy at hand opportunity to buy more 4 times a day.

[–] Bipauler@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

Alcohol is rough in a similar way for many folks.

[–] Noja@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

My dad only quit once he had a moment where he couldn't breathe any more. Asphyxiating is a good motivator!

[–] regdog@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Fantastic show. Super gross, and embarrassing to watch.

[–] Noja@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago

Super gross, and embarrassing to watch

Great, now I have to watch it..
