Stumbled upon someone who seemed completely opposed to the idea of federation and the fediverse. Like, if you are opposed to federation then why are you on here? They seemed to be pretty confused about what the fediverse is all about and likely joined due to misleading advertisements.

@Otome-chan@kbin.social there's definitely been a disconnect between people who just want a reddit alternative and the intended audience of the fediverse i.e. people who want a decentralised internet. I'd wager that a lot of people who left reddit would have happily gone to another social media giant if it had the features they wanted.

@InduperatorRex the person I'm talking about seemed to be on a mastodon instance, actually. But yeah. Same idea. It was probably pitched as a Twitter alternative without clarifying the federation bit

I think you just answered your own question. Those are probably folks who saw people talking about it on Reddit, and came to check it out without knowing how it worked. They're also probably part of the subset who will not be here for long.

@Otome-chan@kbin.social Was that the person who posted saying "I wrote something on Kbin and somebody replied to me from Mastodon and OMG what are they doing sending my stuff everywhere?"

I know that it can be hard to grok the Fediverse when you first stumble across it, but there have been no shortage of attempts to explain it in the last few days.

@losttourist yeah lol. I think they were thinking they signed up for a singular social media platform like Twitter, only to start panicking when they found out about federation.
