Or extortion. He makes a stink, they make some campaign donations, and he backs off or gives them a slap on the wrist.

From what I heard [a Democratic representative say] the two victims were holding on to wreckage, barely staying afloat, for an hour before they were killed.

The poor and desperate, yes.

Threatening people into turning in their neighbors is some NK bullshit. Paying people to rat on them is just the next evolution of capitalism.

To be clear, we gained jobs in November but we have as many today as we did in April.

Of course it is, because nobody is willing to try and quantify or qualify the harms that seeing pornography has on a young person. It's just "adult content" so we'll go so far as to put VR headsets on everyone and ask them to verify their age or else they get a PG, low-polygon representation of reality!

Either way it's a slam dunk for the defense IMO. He became President despite the video so it couldn't have hurt him in any meaningful way. The plaintiff would also have to demonstrate that the editing, outside of all the other shit he's done, did measurable damage to his brand.

We also have as many jobs as we did in April.

Not the answer OP expected but the correct one. Doing strictly nonwork things at work can get you noticed in a bad way. I've had good and bad IT jobs and it's really amazing how a bad job can drive bad behaviors and a good job do the opposite.

Couldn't agree more. I have very loose friendships with old high school buddies and we rarely hang out. My wife however is doing something with her friends 2-3 times per week, having "women only" retreats, calling them almost daily, buying them birthday gifts even if they live out of state, and so on. She's infinitely more connected to a community than I am and for some men I think it's a real challenge to put themselves out there and to try and build up that trust and dependence to a certain degree. Men like to think we're Batman: we want a bare minimum of relationships so they can't be used against us.

Don't know if it's planned obsolescence or just laziness but all of my Nintendo Switches have at least a little drift and I've bought at least two replacement sets of joy-cons AND replaced just the joystick on one unit (PITA and replacements didn't work 100% so I stopped repairing).

I've been successful in replacing built-in batteries in 2 different phones. Granted my families phones are all > 4 years old so maybe it's gotten much harder lately.

Guides seem to reference only the UI version meant for Windows. I only have Linux machines right now and while I probably could spin up a temporary VM I'm guessing that will have its own headaches.

I got all the way to the point of choosing my IMG files but chickened out because, again, no real guides on selecting individual IMG files since the old method would use an entire TAR file.

Any help would be appreciated.

For a little more context I'm trying to convert my phone to a "carrier free" firmware so I get updates from Samsung instead.

Going kind of crazy thinking about the options. I'm ultimately trying to get a stable media server running on my 4B (no transcoding) and I think I'm having power issues.

I had an externally powered NVMe enclosure but I stopped using it mainly because the enclosure wouldn't turn itself back on after a power surge. I switched to a 2.5 SSD with an unpowered adapter cable but occasionally the drive gets disconnected (guessing it's power issues). I would like to use the NVMe drives since I can easily fit the SSD into my desktop (ran out of NVMe slots). It would also be good if I had a solution that supported hardware RAID 1.

Link to Bill with text: https://capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup/History.aspx?LegSess=89R&Bill=SB10

Recently SB10 passed the House to soon be signed by Greg Abbott. Public schools will have to abide by the law and display a copy if one is donated. What are some ways to comply with the law but also piss off the TX lege?

Nothing about color scheme is mentioned in the bill, or font size, or text orientation, or specifics for the frame. I have a few ideas but I also don't want to punish teachers and students with things like a poster made of iron or a gigantic one that covers an entire wall.

At the risk of jinxing myself I just wanted to share how happy I am with my latest installation.

For over a year my Dell XPS has run Ubuntu. It's been, by far, the worst experience I've ever had with any computer and my very first computer had only 256 MB of RAM! Among the long list of issues I've had we're freezing, unresponsive keyboard and touchpad, glitchy video, multicolor flashing screens, piss poor battery life, piss poor Wi-Fi stability, failure to properly suspend or hibernate, and battery levels suddenly going from 40% to 5%. I figured either Dell put some kind of poison pill into there laptop so you'd spring for one of their Linux preinstalled laptops or I just got a lemon (I did have to get the mobo replaced within a month of buying it).

I've been in the process of getting all of my personal files off of it and getting ready to reinstall Windows and sell it, but I figured it was worth one last shot with a new installation. My desktop has been running Bazzite and I've been really happy with it so I thought I'd try another spin-off (Bluefin, because my laptop isn't well suited for gaming). Installation took a few tries but it's been about 72 hours and I haven't noticed any major issues! Battery life and Wi-Fi still seem a bit sad but I suppose that's the hardware.

So anyway, I just wanted to say that one Linux OS can be wildly different from another in user experience. If you have the patience, go ahead and try out something new if you're just not feeling the OS that you're on. It could make a world of difference!

Unless I'm using the wrong terms in my search it really seems like there's no tool for Linux that can tell me what processes used the most CPU (typically this has a high correlation with energy usage) in the last hour or 24 hours.

Basically I want something like the Android battery usage app but for Linux.

It seems kind of insane how hard it's been to find a good TTS app. I have TTS Util and that's worked sporadically but if I get it to start it will stop in the middle of reading. I can't even seem to find a basic app to let me paste in text and have it read.

Any recommendations? I'm mostly trying to have web articles read aloud and I don't care about robotic voices that much.

I thought one of the advantages of the Fediverse was to have one account but access to many services. Is this possible just not common? I already have a Lemmy account and Mastodon and I didn't want to start making more just to try out the other services.

Seeing some videos online of people having frank yet cordial discussions about their personal views makes me want to have a similar experience. It can be a daunting and potentially dangerous task to get a bunch of strangers into the same location and get into heated discussions. I think it might go over better in an online Zoom-meeting type of setting. There's still the challenge of organizing the meeting, picking participants (hopefully diverse), and moderating.

If there existed a group chat platform that helped facilitate round-table talks I for one would give it a try. It'd be nice to have controls similar to Zoom but also some scripting to mute and unmute people in a rotating fashion so hopefully everyone gets "equal time".

One of the biggest benefits of Amazon IMO is it's homogeny. That is, It's ability to let you buy products from dozens of different categories, among thousands of vendors, with a unified shopping experience. For any competitor to replicate this would be a monumental task and it would probably take years to see profit. I think most of us want to see decentralization of retail and increased competition and the best way might be a decentralized shopping platform.

While not something that can easily be shoehorned into the Fediverse I think it's worth the effort to try. Sensitive info like addresses, order history, and payments would still have to be managed outside of the Fediverse, but I think it is feasible to have a federated platform that makes it easier to connect consumers with retailers.

OpenSecrets.org is there for your disposal. Use it! Think about businesses you use regularly, products you buy, artists you watch or support. Chances are likely they have a profile on OpenSecrets and you can see who they support. I for one am planning to move my brokerage out of Schwab who donated overwhelming to Republican campaigns and maybe move my insurance to Progressive (not just because of the name, their employees donate significantly more to Democrats).

The weight of billionaires is behind Trump but at the end of the day money will drive his decisions. Taking money away from his donors takes money away from him.

The vote of the electors is on Dec 17th. Their refusal to vote for Donald Trump, while potentially illegal, would actually be binding. The incoming Congress could still flip the result back, but that would also be illegal. The states choose electors and the electors choose the President. Full stop.

So how would we convince electors that are almost always party loyalists? Give them a preview of a Trump presidency. Deport immigrants NOW (or preferably they GTFO on their own), raise tariffs NOW, stop enforcing regulations NOW, start Trump policies right NOW! Make this the worst Thanksgiving in a decades and make Christmas look just as bleak. Once he's in the only way Trump will leave is voluntarily (ha!) or if one of his hirelings stands up to him.
