i'd say it's just so much easier to be hateful and agressive online, because we communicate primarily through text, thus inherently feeling less empaty. Not to mention that text doesn't really convey emotionns, so if you hurt someone, you won't see their reaction, thus won't feel guilt even if you have a developed sense of empathy.
