Hey Pfeffy - welcome to the Agora.

Mostly because I'm curious about what strangers think - particularly on fediverse topics. If you haven't been on this community before, I invite you to take a look at some of the older posts.

A lot of this current lemmy.ml chatter rings super closely to shit we've debated here before, and given that this instance just hit its one year anniversary I think it's interesting to see history repeat itself.

If you're not into it though, totally cool - no hate here!

I have not had a number pad on my keyboard for some time :( I remember this arcane magic

As someone who rescued Micah by immediately shooting the Sherriff of Strawberry and his buddies in the face, much to my sibling's utter shock when they were letting me try RDR2 the first time, I'd say the reverse is also true.

I just turned 35 a couple of days ago, and this is currently on my mind. I need to make some serious changes, 40 cannot be the same as ages 25 to present.

Like, not even talking financially (though that'd be nice) - I mean like finding people who aren't family to hang out with once and a while, smoking less weed/other means of being clearer minded more often, broadening my horizons and participation in meatspace, that kind of thing.

It's to make sure the victim deserves it.

So I have some family that lived in a gated community that used to be a resort for Golden Age Hollywood types. Their clubhouse/community building hadn't been updated much since then, and it had one of these.

100% certain that a) group sex happened here, and b) at least one person broke their ankle in this thing. 90% sure there was at least one time both happened at once.

So I can't personally give the kind of advice you're looking for, but saw this when sorting by new and just wanted to say this isn't a stupid question. You're coming into a state where you're feeling better about yourself, have probably not been caring for yourself the way you should/want to, and are now seeking advice on improving in this area. Good for you! That's actually fucking huge!

It really depends where you are - some places have a lively late night culture, others not so much.

All night diners, 24 hour fast food places are really the only alternatives here (though you could count movie theatres with late showings, I guess).

But (unless you have personal reasons for not being around alcohol and drinkers), you can totally go to a bar with a vibe you like and just hang out drinking soda. Bonus points if that bar has something cool available aside from just booze (barcades, live music venues, etc.).

If you're not looking to specifically be around people, you could also just check out some green space outdoors, but keep your wits about you and use your judgement - some places are lovely to chill at 3:00 am, some would be if it wasn't for the sketchy folks shooting up.

Power nap, cold shower, light exercise (brisk walk), and coffee (bonus points if you have l-theanine to take with it, can help w/ the jittery effects).

'Cause with all the new traffic, Lemmy's alive and full of beans!

From what I understand, it's 'did this human read what we're about here and respond in a way that demonstrates they know what they're signing onto'?

At minimum, it weeds out folks who don't take the time to write a couple sentences, and kinda acts like a crappy lock on a door. If someone's determined to start some nonsense, it's not hard to get in and try. But a lot of folks will try the door once, see it doesn't open right away, and fuck off. They don't want growth for growth's sake, so the fact that this stifles growth to a degree isn't a concern.

But yeah, I agree it doesn't scale very well.

This might be good for some folks to read here to get a better feel of what Beehaw positions themselves as and their thinking:

(What is Beehaw?)[https://beehaw.org/post/107014]
(Behaw is a community)[https://beehaw.org/post/140733]
(A few thoughts on Beehaw's design)[https://beehaw.org/post/439918]

Edit: My assumption is that the links will open in your browser. If this isn't the case maybe I can stick these posts in a pastebin or something, lemmy know ;)

I'm personally disappointed but don't fault them. MY thinking is along The Dude's - ease of participation is key, with all of the risks that entails - but that's why I'm here rather than elsewhere.

Something I don't think a lot of people quite get yet - this is the DIY web. Different people take different approaches to community building, some very carefully and meticulously, and others not so much. And that's good - cool, even, IMO. Clashes are going to happen, but that's ok.

So you can pick another instance, or spin your own, but I'd rather people come from a place of participation rather than consumption on Lemmy writ large. One of the bigger instances defederated from us? Well shit, guess we're gonna have to make some content ourselves.

Post often, comment often, call fellow sh.it.heads (and other folks too) out if they're acting like shitheads. Be a positive presence in the Fediverse. Make some friends. The rest will sort itself out in time.

What is Code? (www.bloomberg.com)

Paul Ford goes on a long, meandering, but super interesting account of code as it relates to business and our world today.

Figured why not make my first post here a classic ;)

What is your favourite place in Ottawa that doesn't exist anymore? I've spent most of my formative years outside of Ontario, but as a frequent visitor and now resident Ottawa always struck me as a place that doesn't really value the longevity of cool stuff. Maybe it's just ignorance of the economic forces involved, but any time I was shown something cool here I always left with the sense that it wouldn't be there next time.

For me, I divide this into places I've been and places I didn't get to go.

Some of where I've been:
-Invisible Cinema
-The InfoShop on Bank
-Rideau Bakery
-The Ex when it was still at Lansdowne.

Some of where I didn't get to go:
-The Beachcomber Room
-Capital Music Hall

What about you?

Just thinking out loud with all the current buzz - Anyone on here connected to National Capital Freenet? Would they have any interest in hosting a Lemmy instance for locals by donation (like they do with email, but donation scaled appropriately for whatever costs they take on)?

Always good to add another node, and from the outside this sounds like it would be in their wheelhouse (non-corporate, low/managed cost digital communication access).
