Revisiting the 1997 Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback Pro joystick for PC! This started off as simple FFB stick nostalgia, showing off a few Windows 95 games, annnd ended up going down rabbit holes on gameport adapters, DirectX, patent trolls, and the quiet demise/resurrection of force feedback flight sticks.

I remember when this movie first came out, Mark Kermode (uk film critic) was reviewing it on his podcast and noted that Flatley had won "Best Actor" for this movie at the "Monaco Streaming Film Festival". Kermode pointed out, that for this to be true it must mean that it competed against at least one other movie, which somehow had acting worse that Flatley's. So Kermode went on a quest to learn more about this film festival and the other films in the competition. Each week on the podcast he gave updates on his quest. He was able to get in touch with someone from the festival who could confirm that yes, it was a real festival and that yes, there were other films in competition. When asked about these other films, the correspondent couldn't directly provide any information and would need to consult "the archives" (for a film festival that had taken place 4 months prior). The back and forth went on for weeks, but ultimately Kermode had to give up. We never found out what films had worse acting than Flatley in Blackbird...

Most folks here are tech savvy and don't mind the kbin name, but I don't expect some of my friends to 'get' it.

To be honest, I don't 'get' it either. Does kbin mean anything? Is it meant to be like 'cabin' or something...

Yeah, Feedly is great. Been using it for years and very happy with it.

It's kind of a bummer that RSS never took off the way it deserved. It is kind of a precursor to what we have now with Fediverse/ActivityPub.

All I knew playing it was that if I lowered them, the game played cheering sounds and booed me if I raised them.

As a kid, whenever I had to raise taxes, I would raise them one increment higher than I needed and get all the boos. Then lower back down one increment to get the cheers. I figured if you end on cheers, that must mean they are happy, right?

Lemmy has so far made $0 total profit. So that makes them substantially more profitable than Reddit.

I found this bit amusing:

To get WinGPT working without a proxy, the Dialup.net developer has also developed a 16-bit port of the WolfSSL library to support TLS 1.2 and 1.3 connections on the ancient operating system. This port is, as the developer says, "not secure, not reliable, and there is no warranty," and it should be used for entertainment purposes only. The port doesn't verify security certificates and uses "a fake random number generator" to function.

On the other hand, kbin has a cumulative score, but currently implements it badly wrong. Your cumulative 'reputation' is calculated as "boosts - downvotes". So if you post a thread that gets 100 upvotes, 9 downvotes, 80 comments and 5 boosts, you are rewarded with '-4 reputation'. Nobody really uses boost, so it is very easy to rack up negative reputation.

Thankfully, I don't think 'reputation' actually does anything, but it is still kind of annoying to be 'punished' for posting.

The production design on this movie looks incredible. It's like kitsch turned up so high it becomes fine art. Can't wait to see this. Never imagined the Barbie movie would be my most anticipated movie of the year...

From PCMIDI.EU comes the Orpheus 2 – a new 16-bit ISA sound card! Could this be the best one for vintage computers right now? An argument can be made for that I think. On-board Gravis Ultrasound PnP compatibility, plus all the Orpheus 1 features like Sound Blaster Pro compatibility, Yamaha OPL3, and an intelligent mode MPU-401. As far as modern replica sound cards go, this thing is a step above the rest at the moment!
