Finally got around to fixing the sewing machine. But I needed something to test it on. I found a just-big-enough piece of linen to make a bandana.

To hit a price point most bandanas are ~22 inches. That's way too small for my head. Most are polyester. Which means they don't wick away moisture. You want a 27 inch cotton and those cost extra. Like twice as much.

But linen? That's premium. Those start at ~$15 and go up from there. More durable, less environmental impact, better at evaporating than cotton. A linen bandana easily pays for itself if you are the kind of person that needs a bandana.

Now that my machine is working I just need an iron and fabric to start making things happen. Time to go to a thrift store and start looking carefully at fabric that can be repurposed.

Chili from home grown peppers and tomatoes, dry beans, smoked hog jowl and scratch made chili powder.

The cornbread is a mess because I misplaced my dedicated corn bread cast iron and used a different pan. This resulted in a longer cooking time and an overly crispy top.

Cost per person, including the cornbread: $1.53. But it took 7 months and 5 hours.

I'm for anything that stops him from blending into the carpet.

If you drive far enough down any country road you will eventually find a hundred year old building that is used to store round bales of hay. They get full in the fall as the last bales get moved in and they will be mostly empty by the end of winter.

That's a national security issue.

I'm halfway there.

I'd start with a jack fruit as your meat substitute.

Just to clarify, it's a towel for rescue animals. Not a towel that is a pet. But yes, we are Ford Prefect compliant

Liver mush is made with just the liver and as much tastier.

And livermush. I was delighted to find when I moved to the Carolinas that there was a whole new breakfast meat in my life.

For a moment I thought this wasn't a pipe.

I am always amazed at how much and how far back the Arab influence goes in Poland.

Chicken pasta. Home grown tomatoes and basil. The garlic knots were free.

Cost per person, $2

I got a call about a kitten hiding in a 30 foot lomy drainage pipe.

I had to borrow some tools from an auto shop across the street and it took an hour but I got a little bugger out.

Within 15 minutes they handed off to one of our local fosters to the great disappointment of my wife who decided she wanted to keep it

the moment she saw it.

Chicken tacos (lemmy.world)

The tomato and bell pepper came from the garden.

The nopales were an experiment from foraged cactus. Definitely going to try a different recipe for that because the one I used left a lot of gel okra like gel making plating a little harder than it should be. Once I find the right recipe cactus will be a practically free food source

Instead of buying chicken thighs I bought a whole roaster and butchered it myself. This dramatically cuts the cost of chicken as long as you are going to use the whole thing. In this case I just used the thighs but I have uses for the rest including all the "waste" parts going to make a stock at some point.

Cost per person: $3.42 About a dollar of that was just cheese
