Hey folks. I'm relatively new to lemmy and the fediverse. After spending some time here I really like the idea and most of the implementation but there is one major flaw. As a user I cannot seem to ban a whole instance and that really sucks. I do not want to get bombarded by porn all the time but there are more porn communities on lemmy than stars in the universe. I can spend all day blocking them one by one.

So I either need a way to block stuff like porn and similar nonsense instances OR I need a instance finder that can help me find an instance by entering what stuff I need banned and what stuff I need federated. I do not have the time to look through every instance myself.

After switching to the fediverse, I should also replace Google.

Not necessarily. One step to a better internet at a time. Sometimes people get overwhelmed by free software solutions because they try to do everything at once.

But with what?

I've tried a lot but replacing google search is not easy. You can of course use a meta search engine like searx which is great but then you hand your search traffic directly to some random instance owner. You could also use startpage which is basically a firewall for google search. duckduckgo does work and I use it sometimes but the search results are definitely worse than google's. The bangs are a nice feature though.

So clicking on an instance's instance list I can see all the linked instances and all the blocked instances.

Are these all instances that exist? What happens if a single person creates an instance? Is it then automatically "linked" or "blocked" or does it just exist "unlinked". If it exists "unlinked" then what is the difference between "unlinked" and blocked". And how could I get my instance linked if I create a new one?

What would be the use case for having two accounts?

The first thing I did after creating an account here was to go to Settings and find the setting to change that. And I mean at least that option exists and is easy to find. My guess is that the feature of suggesting "subs" after creating an account does not exist yet and just showing an empty feed is not that great.

Someone else explained this pretty well in an answer. If that guy is correct neither users from instance B nor C will see the comment from the A instance user. This is because the post is hosted on instance B. And A-B are not federated (because of the block from B's side). This causes the comments from A to not be synched with B and therefore also not with C by proxy.

I'm new to this. I have one question. Imagine the following setup:

  • Instance A federates with instances B and C
  • Instance B only federates with instance C
  • Instance C federates with instance A and B

Following scenario:

  • Someone on instance B posts something and writes a comment to the post
  • I'm on instance A and I comment on his comment
  • Now someone from instance C comments on my comment

What does a person from instance B see now? I assume he won't see my comment as instance B defederated instance A. But he should see the comment from the instance C guy. But how can he see the reply when the original comment is not visible?

Hope this idea will succeed!
