For context, Steam is now forced to display this due to a new law passed in California: https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/26/24254922/california-digital-purchase-disclosure-law-ab-2426

Valve is not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts.

Because otherwise you'd be supporting the Chromium monopoly, and that's the biggest sin imaginable in the Fediverse.

It has now been 1 year since dormi.zone first entered the Fediverse on 2023-06-07, and it warms my heart to see that people are finding value in a community dedicated to Warframe.

Thank you to everyone who's contributed, and a special thank you to @Keegen@lemmy.zip for hosting the Weekly Warframe discussions!

You can expect to see a larger post in the coming weeks where I'll go into detail on my present & future plans with this instance.

Hello everyone! When this post is about 24 hours old, dormi.zone will be offline for multiple hours to upgrade Lemmy to version 0.19.3.

This version introduces instance blocking for users and improves post ranking and two-factor-authentication.

Be advised that this update will disable 2FA for all users who currently have it enabled.

Hello everyone.

As you most likely have noticed, this community (along with some communities on other Lemmy instances) has become the target of a spam wave that quickly rose to prominence across the Fediverse: https://techcrunch.com/2024/02/20/spam-attack-on-twitter-x-rival-mastodon-highlights-fediverse-vulnerabilities/

For a while I thought staying alert and catching spam posts manually would be sufficient to weather the storm, but I was wrong. ~~Even when I managed to remove posts immediately, it appeared as if the federation of either removals or reports was delayed, as I kept receiving plenty of reports by members of foreign instances for posts I had already removed.~~

I'm aware this spam has negatively impacted many users who view !warframe@dormi.zone, some of which have understandably seen themselves forced to block this community to keep the spam off their feed. I took too long to take proper action, and I'm sorry.

A group of great Mastodon instance admins have managed to aggregate a list of instances that currently house the spam bots. As of now, dormi.zone blocks all instances found in this list. If you're at home on one of those instances and are now cut off from this community because of the block, please understand that this is currently the best option Lemmy by itself offers to contain these sorts of attacks.

In the future, I will try to set up an AutoModerator that should handle these attacks more efficiently. Recent IRL circumstances have left me with limited time to look after dormi.zone, and I'm thankful for your patience in these times.

EDIT: I have been informed by admins from other Lemmy instances that because of the specific moderation action I took (banning the spammers from this instance), post removals weren't federating, keeping the posts visible on some foreign instances. This is why I might have looked like I took days to remove some posts.

The end goal of this proposal is to build interoperability features into GitLab so that it’s possible on one instance of GitLab to open a merge request to a project hosted on an other instance, merging all willing instances in a global network.

To achieve that, we propose to use ActivityPub, the w3c standard used by the Fediverse. This will allow us to build upon a robust and battle-tested protocol, and it will open GitLab to a wider community.

This is why I primarily shop at GOG. There are almost no other storefronts left that promote DRM-free games.

I can understand defederating from Threads, but transitive defederation is bordering on insanity.

This will do nothing but exert peer pressure onto instances that wish to remain impartial. Transitive defederation will play right into Meta's hands by fragmenting the Fediverse further.

[-] HKayn@dormi.zone 52 points 11 months ago

Your instance will still exist, and federation should continue as normal if you manage to reclaim the original domain.

If you have to switch to a new one, however, federation will be very awkward. Other instances will essentially treat you as a brand-new instance, and mirrors of old content will be "orphaned" and no longer sync.

Don't find yourself in a false sense of security.

Your games on Steam are just as ephemeral as any other digital content purchased online.

Man I feel bad for the developers at Microsoft who have to implement this shit

[-] HKayn@dormi.zone 110 points 1 year ago

No, absolutely not.

For purely scientific articles Wikipedia is great. But anything remotely controversial or even political on that site should be taken with a grain of salt.

There's too many editors out there who enforce their biases and wage war on such articles.

Can you please stop editorializing titles?

I came here hoping to see gnome and X11 memes. You know, actual Linux memes.

Instead I found "Windows bad" circlejerking.

[-] HKayn@dormi.zone 65 points 1 year ago

As a Linux user myself, it saddens me to see how much the Linux fandom is invalidating itself with its aggressive attitude.

[-] HKayn@dormi.zone 82 points 1 year ago

You bring up valid points, but you are being very antagonistic towards server admins in the process. I get that you're frustrated by being dismissed all the time
