Well it isn't, but Francis made a whole deal about it and you even had a couple of priests call him a heretic for it.
Like with all admissions of the Catholic church the answer is "Yes, but". The clarification is that there is no such place as purgatory, you can't go to purgatory. Purgatory is a process that happens to you in heaven.
Literally no one masks at my uni or at the hospital. I don't even use that as a meaningful exaggeration, I mean that I have not seen a mask either place. Not even at the lung disease clinic.
