I vote to defederate. Like I said before, I was looking for an Oregon community and the only one that showed up in search results was the exploding heads one, which had a long history of posts denigrating trans and homeless people. In this case, I think no content is better than awful content. I wouldn't want some Lemmy newbie joining this server and misconstruing the Oregon community federated from them as our own.

I'm really hoping that someday we'll have a process to enable migration like a DHT and a user private key that allows them to send out a message like "i was user@instance.a but now I'm user@instance.b"... I heard talks about cross-fediverse account linking (maybe like keybase?) So hopefully something like that

I made an account here as a beehaw user and I'm glad that the two mod teams are in discussion. Servers have the right to cordon off their users, but I'd hate to miss out on the content. I feel mixed on the decision, as is represented by my dual accounts.
