Yeah I've pretty much accepted that kbin.social is just gone at this point. I also owned a community there (/m/ai). I didn't have any spammers appear, but it eventually just died since spam ruined the rest of the instance.

The signs were already there months in advance, but most of us stayed on the instance in hopes that the dev would eventually take up one of the offers to help maintain the instance. Was fun while it lasted, and was the best alternative to Reddit for sure as a software. I don't even know how Ernest kept up with development during the initial Reddit exodus lol.

Honestly, I'm not impressed with Lemmy so far and I don't really vibe with mbin for personal reasons even though the software is great.

This whole kbin story has just pointed out a lot of flaws in the Fediverse as a whole for me. I still like the idea, but the execution needs improvement.

I literally cannot use Linux at the moment due to incompatible software, as much as I love Linux and use it on every other computer I own.

These posts about Windows and other mainstream platforms are helpful or interesting for some of us, I wish people on Lemmy would stop shooting them down just because they don't like Windows/Micro$oft.

This has been a long time in the making...hopefully Firefox will see a market share increase. Google is doing this right as they get slapped by an antitrust ruling ironically lol. If you haven't already just go ahead and switch, if you like Lemmy you'll probably like Firefox as well.

Side note: I try not to be negative here, but this would be a great time for Mozilla to get their act together as an organization. Love Firefox and the idea, but Mozilla has been pissing off the FOSS space for a while now with their decisions. If they've improved in recent years, disregard this.

Eh this is the same guy who has promised real self-driving cars within 2 years....every 2 years. I'll believe it when I see it.

(also why is OP being downvoted for posting the article, it's news and from a reputable site)

Preposterous. Sounds hilarious, and looks/sounds very sophisticated in a good way.

This lemmy community is a thing? Saw it on the front page, got me excited.

As for the actual article, makes you wonder what the next 10-20 years will look like. We very well might be moving towards finally having the renewable-powered world we need.

A bit of a rant here.

Recently joined the wider Lemmy community (coming from kbin.social, o7). I like it, but the constant negativity and fear mongering/bait in large communities keeps me from engaging more. I just kind of wish there were more relaxed communities like how niche subreddits can be. I've seen a lot more arguments here than the kbin-specific communities or even Reddit honestly.

I'm going to continue using Lemmy at least for now, but I just hope this place can move past the negativity that plagues major social media platforms already. I get everybody has their views, but is it a requirement to share them every comment/post? It's all jokes and no seriousness on Reddit to all seriousness here. Not very enjoyable. Feels like a lot of the users who created cool niche communities after the Reddit exodus got driven away by the negativity and frivolous downvoting.

Gen Z.

This place is a lot older than I expected.

Internet generation, progenitors of current online brainrot. Came too early to experience the 90s in all its glory, and too late for running console-quality games on a 6mm thick mobile device.

At least we have the 2010s to claim for ourselves. Those were pretty cool.

I'm conflicted when it comes to mine so I'm just going to throw a few out. It'd take me forever to make a definite choice:

  • Code Geass: Ridiculous plot and Lelouch is such a well written character
  • Initial D: I love cars, the soundtrack, and the added dynamic of relationships on top of racing and dreams.
  • FLCL: Soundtrack, animation, and how it makes 0 sense as a plot device
  • Vinland Saga: Season 2 (and the Vinland Arc in the manga)
  • Samurai Champloo: I like hip-hop, cool samurai, and long journeys. The ending was one of my favorites in any anime because of how simple it was

So glad to be hearing actual good news for once.

Happy Pride btw

I use Debian on nearly everything that isn't a "testing machine"...it's just what I'm familiar with. Used to be like this with Fedora. If you are looking to just use it as a regular end user and don't really need anything different or particularly want some new scenery, you might as well just install Debian again.

Cheap scissors for your car. You never know when you need to open something that would be difficult to do with your hands for whatever reason.
