a moment from the 2023 wave of protests still sits with me. a woman being dragged away by the morality in a city center screaming "REMEMBER ME" as loud as she could as a crowd watched in silence. it haunts me

fuck i just lost 3 paragraphs of work because i thought i could write this up on my phone now that i'm done with work and my wife's using the only working charger we have right now. i'm gonna need to regather my thoughts again because now i'm too mad at all that lost work to focus my energy on what i have to say

(stupid cancel button having no "are you sure?" prompt)

i'm still gonna leave my outline for my future self though because i think i'm coming down with something:

  • an acknowlegement of the Marxist-Leninist tone of this meme
  • a critique of how this is EXACTLY the kind of agitprop the CIA pumps out to discredit leftist groups
  • an exploration of what left and right are and have been for the last 16,000 years when the terms old only about 230 years old
  • a conclusion questioning if ideological revisionism and historical revisionism can even actually be different when inellectual discourse has only been subdivided into buckets for ~300 years, especially when as leftists part of our outlook on the world is that action, history, and patterns of thought are all interconnected notions (this is the part i'm the most excited about since it leans into the interplay of Focault, Marx, Mao, and Trotsky. no weirdo anarchist thinkers like myself even needed)

well as long as no one bothered, i'm gonna keep going

placeholder comment that i'm gonna get back to this when i have time to sit at my computer and gather my thoughts so as to avoid being flippant, off-handed, or in any way less than helpful

fair enough. the intended meaning within this context is the self directed effort toward healing and making amends

I will not engage with your politics until you are ready to say to me "I love myself, and I want to love others the way my community loves me"

- Gitxsan saying

The idea being that you can provide for someone and aid their finding their way back to the path of goodness, but you will not listen until they're a ways along that path. So yes. Fascists will get access to food, water, and healthcare, but they should NEVER be allowed near the guns, ammo, and political stations that they abused us with until they show true repentance for the harm they have done us. And for some of these fuckheads, a single lifetime will not be enough for them to demonstrate repentance and make the people they have harmed whole again

The event I was referencing was 1921, and the last time a picketer was shot was 2023, but whatever I guess...

Why look at recent history when you can make declarations about how this is all ancient history

Tell that to the miners Baldwin-Felts shot

On a basis of Umberto Eco's Ur-Fascism, fascism never really went away. It merely changed its aesthetic forms and went back into lurking.

Great historical video though. Want to make sure it's clear this is not a criticism of this video, merely my own input that I think we have to confront that fascism wasn't defeated by the allies in 1945. Merely one form of fascism. In the years that would follow, the Soviet Union would implement its own form of police state while in the US the FBI and J Edgar Hoover controlled nearly all forms of political discourse, creating an environment that would erode much of the power the Unions had gained prior to WWs I and II. These forms of covert fascism would eventually give way to the forms of overt fascism we currently experience today with the breaking point coming in the period of 1999 (when Vladimir Putin first became Prime Minister) and 2002 (passage of the United States' Homeland Security act).

I try to not downvote top level posts without explanation so let me explain:

Revisionists can never be based. Revisionism is a tool of the right wing. It has only ever acted in support of fascism because fascism is the political position that an authoritarian government controls the past, and who controls the past controls the future. Leftism meanwhile is driven by a drive for truth, justice, and peace.

I didn't find this to be a left-wing meme. I found it to be right wing propaganda. We can have a longer discussion of what the aim of the originator of this was, but I want to keep it brief and on topic.

for sure! you can still find little post war housing developments where every house the same. what i was trying to drive out is its accelerated and the developments have gotten bigger and less smartly planned

I have an opposing theory that Pizza Hut is a symptom of late stage capitalistic cancer. In the late 80s the capitalistic process of consolidating power in the Soviet Union into the new oligarchy had nearly run its course and the USSR dissolved not long after Pizza Hut showed up on the scene.

Here, in the homeland of Pizza Hut, Pizza Hut has shifted from being a casual sit down pizza chain, to a casual pizza buffet chain, to an exclusively carry out fast food pizza chain. The uniqueness of the architecture has been lost just as architectural drive in the USSR shifted over time from Construcivist to Stalinist to Brutalist to Soviet modernist (which is commonly critiqued for lacking personality in comparison to prior eras).

Here in the states we are currently seeing all of our architecture lose personality. Suburban developments are the same house over and over again, often not constructed to code. Car oriented developments are just the same strip mall or basic big box store plopped all over the place with no design considerations given to the surrounding landscape. Even our shitty pizza joints have lost what little personality they once had, now becoming relegated to existing within strip malls next to illusion of choice grocery stores.

support local music! local music, no matter how un-punk it may at first seem is always solarpunk (unless the band expresses overtly anti-solarpunk views).

this grouping is local to me put out by a local record label. i have made no secret of that my national origin is Appalachia and that i carry with me significant Ukrainian-Jewish influences. i've been worried lately i've been posting too much to this comm and am disrupting other people's ability to find and share their beloved local acts.

as such i've made it a rule for myself to post only one act per day (not that it's easy to find one novel thing to share daily). what do people think? i've been detting more and more positive reactions the more i've posted, but i don't want to colonize this into a single user comm where i'm not even the moderator. should i slow it down or keep things going?

Appalachian song about what a better, post-opressor world would look like. this is a standard gospel tune that quietly sneaks a message of ecological justice into what it means to be a servent of Jesus through solidarity with your neighbor.

(disclosure: i love this song, but i am not Christian)

this is a song about Pan-Americanism and one of the centers of Pan-American thought, New York City. i see a lot of people, and on Lemmy, in particular, not understanding what Pan-Americanism is. Pan-Americanism is not a pro-Americanism stance that just wants the otherecountries of the western hemisphere to get their benefits from the western empire. Pan-Americanism is an anti-colonial framework of thinking that views all oppressed peoples living under the yoke of the western empire as being in actuality a single people who should be working together to resist Americanism and create a new, non-imperial, system of being that would see all people of the Western hemisphere sharing in the benefits of peaceful cooperation.

New York City is one of the centers for Pan-Americanism because it's where a lot of people indigenous to the Western hemisphere wind up for work and find themselves discovering that many of the separations between the people living in the Western hemisphere are completely arbitrary.

some people who mistake Pan-Americanism for Americanism often question "if it's anti-Americanist, why is it called Pan-Americanism and not something that centers indigenous labels in the discussion? the simple answer is that the indigenous people called the Americas many different things. they were not a monolith and they needed a shared label to be pan-[that label] and the only really shared name, cross culturally, for The Americas, is The Americas, thus, Pan-Americanism

EP about belonging to two cultures but still feeling othered within both

i left language unselected because it has songs in Spanish and English as the story told in the EP is about a man whose mother fled Cuba in 1965 to escape the conflict between Alpha 66 and Castro and whose father, like him, was born in Virginia
