Because that’s the way the legal system works.

“Oops, had some harmful/illegal content on there? Nobody was /really/ hurt, or at least, we weren’t directly causing harm. I’ll take it down and eat a small fine.

Vs

“Oh I’m sorry, I’ll take down the 30s clip of your 90s movie. it has caused you 3million in damages? I’m so sorry, here’s some tools that will automate detection and removal of your property. I’m so sorry”

The problem occurs when house prices tumble from an influx of sales, and the 32% (In NZ) of your population that are paying their mortgage off on their primary residence are potentially plunged into negative equity on rising interest rates.

Once you’re there, you’re kind of fucked. You can sell, but you’ll still owe the bank money, so you can’t buy/downsize. You can’t even change banks. You’re a risky customer, so you get higher interest rates. All you can do is hope the market rebounds or declare bankruptcy.

So you’re risking fucking over 30% of your nation (and arguably the most productive segment of your country as they’re earning money to pay that mortgage), to appease a fraction of (as not every renter can/wants to buy. Eg, students, temporary immigrant workers etc) the 30% of renters that are being fucked over by high house prices.

Not to mention, all the renters you’ve displaced into an even more competitive rental market.

But that’s not to say the solution is to shrug your shoulders and let the landlord class continue to punch down.

It would be expensive, but you could guarantee (current) mortgages for primary residences in cases of financial hardship. Buy mortgagees out and turn the houses into state housing, renting them back to the previous owners at fair prices.

This has not been the case for me.

Sometimes it prints, sometimes it prints the first page for however many pages in the document, sometimes it says it prints but does nothing, sometimes it errors, sometimes I have to restart CUPS, sometimes I have to delete the autodiacovered printer and make a new one.

It’s always a drama.

Is there any evidence of it? The Wikipedia page says “which may include unclothed or partially clothed photos” but doesn’t necessarily mean there is any.

Is “The Algorithm” just “we stuffed all our GPT responses into a Lucene index and look for 80% matches”?

Because that’s what I’d do.

I had an appointment booked at my GO. Get there 10 mins early. Everything’s normal, one other person in the waiting room.

Other person gets called in. Still normal.

Receptionist walks through the waiting room, locks the front door, then shuts the shutter to the reception desk. “Uh what”

20mins pass, haven’t seen another soul. Not tooo unusual to wait 20mins.

40mins, sunk cost fallacy sets in. Can’t leave anyway as the front door is locked.

50 mins later, receptionist comes in “the doctor will see you now, sorry for the wait we had our weekly staff meeting”

You fucking what. You booked me in at the time you have your fucking weekly staff meeting?!

Welcome to NZ where at least 40% of our advertising is puns and innuendo.

It increases to 70% when talking about tradespeople.

It takes two people, but only one married person to commit adultery.

Meanwhile google:

we have hand picked a selection of 6 establishments in your area. They are:

  • one high end establishment that costs $80 for a main
  • a Chinese takeaway that is closed
  • a bhan mi place that doesn’t actually exist any more
  • a pizza chain
  • somewhere affordable, within walking distance, but not what you feel like.
  • an automotive bodywork shop

What fresh hell of link rings is this.

A lemmy post, linking to a Mastodon post (yes, the video is linked as a comment here), linking to a vice article.

Relatively normal so far.

Except, it’s an article about a video. The only copy of the video in the article is actually a twitter embed of the author posting the article and then replying to the tweet with the video.

Why isn’t the video just in the article?!

Met a guy at a house party that everyone seemed to like. Had some interesting stories, but he mostly came off as a self obsessed dickhead.

He later became pretty noteworthy in the industry he worked in.

10 years on from when I met him, turns out he’s at best a serial sexual assaulter, and a serial rapist at worst.
