YT non-premium here, it's been working alright for me and even recovered from opening another video link over top of the PiP video. It paused and restarted after closing the competing video without issue. In my experience it's just a buggy feature sometimes regardless of OS version.

Strings found in the developer beta of visionOS suggest that Vision Pro will require entering a “Travel Mode” to operate on an airplane. This mode requires the user to remain stationary, disables the realtime digital persona representation, and disables ‘some awareness features.’

The text strings also include a message warning that the current fit could reduce gaze accuracy, though it is unclear if this is related at all to travel mode or simply poor headset fit.

Personally, I’m curious if travel mode will increase battery life by any significant amount. With the 2 hour battery life cutting things close when watching a movie, extending that runtime to 3 hours or so would be excellent. It will remain to be seen how much Vision Pro sacrifices in travel mode, and how this affects the experience.

Apple has released their visionOS SDK allowing developers to begin creating experiences for Vision Pro. Apple also promises that next month it will make Unity app porting tools available to developers, allowing them to more easily transition existing VR experiences to Apple’s platform.

I definitely agree about the device switching improvements, it’s been working surprisingly well for me. Though I do wish they’d add a button on the device that steals the connection to return it to the other device, rather than just seeing that option on the device whose connection was taken.

Edit: it would appear I’ve caught a case of the dumb, that button totally exists

Caveman Studios, the devs behind one of VR's most popular shooters, Contractors, have announced a spinoff project titled 'Contractors Showdown.'

Set to release in 2024, Contractors Showdown is a battle royale taking place on a 4km x 4km map, releasing on "multiple platforms." It will support cross-platform matchmaking, and introduce new features such as a tactical PDA, 'call-in support,' and customizable weapons to name a few. The teaser trailer briefly shows the game's map, which appears to have a heavy focus on roads; possibly suggesting the addition of player controlled vehicles.

How’s everyone’s experience been going with the AirPods Beta firmware? Any glitches you’ve noticed? Thoughts on Adaptive mode?

I’ll start off: I straight up don’t understand the point of Adaptive transparency. To me it just feels like a worse performing transparency mode, and doesn’t actually block out any noises I’d want it to. My connection and battery life has been good on the beta though, with pretty much only one major bug I’ve noticed. For a couple of days, one of the AirPods at a time would stop reporting its charge percentage to any devices until I put it in the case for 5 minutes. I’ve reported the bug, but also haven’t seen it again all week.

What about you folks?

My take is that I found some of Linus' complaints a bit disingenuous, particularly a comparison he makes between using the headset at your desk while plugged in, and being fully stuck at your desk wearing wired headphones (as though the headset can't simply be unplugged from the wall and taken for walk without interrupting the ongoing task). I also disagree that the proprietary magnetic connector into the headset is anything to be upset about, considering the amount of strain these headset ports can get exposed to. I do hope this connection is capable of transmitting data, but aside from that I'm not feeling bothered by the proprietary connector.

And on a more emotional response level, I just found his whole narrative of "what even is the use case for this platform?" a bit silly. Considering Linus has mentioned being a VR gamer multiple times in the past, it just felt like a lack of imagination to not be able to see the point of a higher quality, lower-barrier-to-entry version of the immersive technologies he clearly finds some purpose in. And ultimately, Apple is treating this as a Mac or an iPhone: the new computing platform. It's going to be pretty heavily up to the users how far and where this all goes.

The end, if anyone needs to borrow a soap box lmk

Curious to hear others' thoughts. Obviously we're more likely to disagree here and find value in the product, but were there any criticisms you found accurate? Is this this device 'for you,' or are you just curious about it?

Pavlov has received its long awaited Update 29, which introduces PSVR2 cross-platform lobbies, and switches over to Unreal Engine 5 and OpenXR. Previous mods are unfortunately bjorked, but a new mod browser has been added to replace Steam Workshop.

Users running eye-tracking hardware compatible with OpenXR toolkit should now able to enable eye-tracked foveated rendering as well; I can confirm it is working on my Quest Pro.

If it's been a while since you've played Pavlov, consider giving it a shot! The increased player count from PSVR has been great, and it feels good to be back after mostly playing Contractors for several months.

Pavlov's recently released Update 29 migrates the game to UE5 and OpenXR. As a result, it is now compatible with OpenXR Toolkit's eye-tracked foveated rendering feature. I experienced some visual glitches at first when running it in 'Performance + Narrow' modes, but changing them to 'Quality + Wide' and relaunching the game fully resolved them, even while doing things like aiming with one eye closed. Some experimenting might yield more performance gains without resurfacing the glitches.

Instructions for OpenXR Toolkit are contained in the link above and more comprehensively written up than I could do, but if there's interest I may make a separate post explaining the process and what I've experienced in which apps, just to have some more useful information available here. Don't expect massive performance gains, but as I'm running QP at max resolution on a 2080ti, I'm happy to take what I can get lol.

Also, this update added cross play with PSVR so lobbies are significantly more active. If you haven't been playing for a while, now's a good time to give it another shot!

Good looking out, I'll add it to the list!

This sucks, but they were upfront when PVE was announced that it would be paid, while PVP would be free.

That doesn’t excuse the PVP effectively not being so free with the hero unlock system, the $20 OW1 skins, or announcing that they’ve reduced the PVE scope to the point of invalidating the point of making a sequel and then STILL charging for it.

But it was always going to be paid.

What I'm waiting to see is whether there’s anything worth paying for here, or if we’re just being milked for the Archives missions we were already getting for free. Blizzard being Blizzard, I’m expecting the latter. This whole thing is just a masterclass in shitting the bed and being surprised when the community recoils.

I’ve mostly been in Contractors as per usual, but today I plan to check out the new major Pavlov update. I’m also curious to check No Man’s Sky since you mention it and it’s gotten a bunch of updates since I last played.

How is NMS’ performance these days? I always struggled to get a playable experience even with some pretty thorough tweaking

I definitely feel the content drought, but switching my feed to All + Active, and just watching all of the random crap go by has been interesting.

Once the hobby communities start picking up speed again, I think it could be really good
