Americans pay more in taxes towards healthcare than any other country, and then pay for private healthcare on top of that.

It’s great when lawyers use the old Latin phrase but you can still figure out what it means through context.

For context, this article is from the conservative/libertarian Reason.com, and it addresses some conservative counter-arguments.

All the exceptions are fake. How long does a rape conviction take to secure, assuming the perp is actually found guilty at all? Longer than a few weeks, that’s for sure!

Your wording makes it sound like the existence of even more dangerous trucks somehow excuses this dangerous truck. Both the 4 ft wall and the sharp metal blade edges are dangerous and irresponsible designs.

By that logic, imagine how much a soccer ball will cost!

On one hand, there’s the risk that someone might get murdered by their spouse. On the other, the risk that someone is wrongfully deprived of their guns for a period of time.

Which risk should we minimize? This doesn’t seem like a tough decision to me.

It feels like we’re finally waking up from insane free market dogmatism. I’m liking the active regulatory posture of the Biden administration.

Even if only one percent of people want smaller phones, with the huge volume of phones sold I don’t understand how that’s not enough to justify a healthy market.

Sure there is.

  • campaigning for vice president
  • campaigning for 2028
  • Trump, who is an objectively old man, may die before the election
  • however unlikely, Trump somehow loses support, perhaps by being sent to jail. He’ll always have his loyal core, but moderate republicans and independents may abandon him
  • Republicans can test different policies and message

I’ve always felt this system was morally dubious. A poorer country spends public money and social resources to educate their population and a rich country like Canada actively recruits them once they’re already trained, sometimes just to be Uber drivers who can’t get their certifications recognized. Meanwhile, Canada saves money on training their own nurses (and other professionals). Even straight A students can have a hard time getting into nursing programs because there aren’t enough spots. As usual, we underinvest.

Canada has literally the most educated populace in the world, but I’m not convinced we’re using all that human potential efficiently.

You might notice I said we should “move away from cars” which obviously includes building alternatives not just abandoning cars.

If you’re responding in good faith and genuinely wanting to learn about this topic, you might try looking into how other countries (I presume you’re American or Canadian?) manage with fewer cars. For example, other cold countries like Finland and northern Japan walk, bike, and use public transportation all year round, even in -20 weather. Check out this video. Totally possible. Obviously, the US and Canada had big cities before the invention of cars, so I’m not sure why you think there are no possible alternatives to cars.
