I just... Don't believe it. I generally believe there is more going on than nothing but if the US had a spaceship with an alien body then we are really fucking bad at capitalizing on that technology, past the point of believability.

They are talking about karma as a thing you could collect, point totals for all posts added together displayed on your profile. Not the voting mechanism itself.

As a kid I had it hammered into my head by my grandparents that patriotism is the desire to improve (and maintain) the place where one lives.

I wish more people had that perspective. "Patriotism" as a description of blind devotion and themed outfits is pretty dumb.

I love the comic strip and am looking forward to this.

But apple tv? That sucks. For them, mostly, I'm just gunna have to pirate it.

The most convincing argument that elon does a lot of cocaine is just listening to him speak in a less formal interview.

BUT! I don't think he used to be actually smart, just lucky. Too many people assume "succesful" people had to have done something exceptional to earn it, but 99% of extremely wealthy people acquired that extreme wealth through a simple combination of luck and startup capital (which of course they have because they are lucky).

If you suddenly got notified that the place you live has been redistricted to put you in a district which reduces your voting power, would you be ok with your "solution" of uprooting your entire life, changing jobs, finding a new place to stay, and re-registering to vote? Or would you maybe pursue a less completely-insane solution to the problem?

Call me boring if you want but this was already overdone and annoying by the second time they did it. Not looking forward to dumb screenshots of hard to understand pixel drama taking over everything again, it will probably be posted all over lemmy too...

The tankies have been on lemmy longer than anyone else (and helped develop it I guess?) And they are still around. The normal instances have defederated from them and no one has to interact with them, but they still exist.

Whether you consider it a pro or a con, there are no advertisers terrified of negative brand association here, and the only way an instance gets shut down is if it gets caught hosting explicitly criminal content.

Lastly this isn't a tankie. Tankies are insanely pro-military, obsessed with nationalism (for places like china or russia usually), and one of their favorite pastimes is denying the negative history of their favorite "communists".

This is just a dark joke about the history of how workers rights were originally fought for, in america and elsewhere. Look up the coal wars.

They started stacking stones when they got stuck on the island, and she symbolically stopped with the seashell when they were free. It is the intended final addition. Kinda makes it an informative monument, they have a sort of physical record of how many generations were stuck on the island.

I doubt they would be willing to let people host and control their own versions of federated facebook, and I'm wondering then what would make it "decentralized" exactly. Are they just using decentralized as a buzz word because they are using ActivityPub?

I was originally introduce to reddit by my dad about 12 years ago. He has been using it for about 16 years now.

It seemed when all the talk about the blackout started, he was completely in agreement with me. We both thought the blackout was a good idea, were cracking jokes about how we were gunna find something to do with all our free time.

I started looking around and found the buzz about lemmy and kbin. Started trying to figure out how federated sites work. It felt like information overload, but I didn't have anything else to entertain me so I made an account and started finding groups, and now I am enjoying my time browsing here a lot.

My dad had a different experience. He continued to check reddit through the first day of the blackout and by the second he was browsing it as often as ever. He seemed to have stopped caring about all the subs that were gone and protesting and just wanted some stuff to read and look at. When I tried to joke with him about it he seemed apathetic to it all.

I tried to get him to browse lemmy, to see how he likes it. He wasn't interested. I tried sending him links to specific posts, and he didn't really care or look at them. We used to share reddit posts with each other and talk about them, and I was kinda surprised he didn't care to do that at all if it wasn't on reddit.

Eventually I sat down with him in his office and got him to make an account on lemmy.world, but he browsed for less than a minute then just switched back to reddit. I just awkwardly left the room after that.

Today I shared another lemmy post with him, just still in the habit of sharing interesting stuff I see. When I asked him later if he looked at it, he told me to stop bugging him about this lemmy stuff.

It feels pretty bad to lose this routine that is an excuse to regularly talk to my dad. I feel like if I want it back I'm going to have to use reddit, because he seems to have a pretty negative perspective of lemmy.

Idk what it is I want from posting this. Maybe I want advice, maybe I want people to talk to because I feel kinda sad now, maybe I want to give people on here perspective on why some people aren't leaving reddit. Thanks for reading if you got this far.

Why aren't they self aware enough to realize they sound like cartoon villains?
