That's exactly the point - focus more on content and less on word count. But also, this tends to be more personal than about writing fiction.

I'm going to be posting a lengthy article about journaling that I am writing currently, along with the setup notes for TrackBear in the FediWriMo community later today, or possibly tomorrow.

And 72pt? Why so tiny? Go for 120pt or 240pt - you could type the word "and" and have three pages. 🀣 But all kidding aside, in the original post for this event I suggested for those using something like Obsidian or Notion (or any other non-paginating editor) they should probably use 300-350 words-per-page as a guideline.

Good idea... I've only been posting to communities that I have been able to reach out to mods first...I will check with them.

Seems like a lot of Misskey instances got defederated for some silly reasons that I won't go into...but at least uwu isn't defederated.

It's confusing...I've had some platforms where I've had to use the @xxx@xxx format, and others don't.

FWIW - I've followed your uwu.social account from my mastodon.social and gotosocial.social accounts.

Do you mean the hashtag, or the account to follow?

I checked from Mastodon.social and was able to see the post under the hashtag, and when I searched for the profile I got:

Yes, I noticed that with all the papers here -- there is quite the rabbit hole to explore.

[–] Unattributed@feddit.online 2 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Thanks! I glanced over this article - looks very detailed, and quite interesting.

This is an excellent list of articles. Thank you very much!

It indeed appears the rabbit hole is deep on this topic...

I have heard several times some fountain pen enthusiasts reference a study that showed that taking notes with a pen and paper encouraged more active engagement, and better retention of material being presented in a class or a conference, than people using a laptop, tablet, etc. (ie, typing).

Does anyone know the exact reference for this study? Most of the time I only hear vague references like "a study found..." or "a study conducted at XYZ University", and I would like to find the actual study and read it for myself.

True, but this is why we have consumer laws... To correct situations where there is over-reach by corporate entities.

Admittedly, these laws are insufficient, and the government is inadequate in addressing many situations.

But, this one I feel there would be a better chance of seeing some action on. Healthcare is a touchy subject in politics, especially the cost of healthcare. Studying and showing the strains this puts on the health system, the consumer and the government resources would have a chance of getting some action.

Likely it would be an uphill battle, but I still think it's worth pursuing.

[–] Unattributed@feddit.online 10 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

My question is: how many more people are negatively affected (in a concrete manner, such as this case) by this proliferation of forced garbage?

I would really like to see a study of exactly these kinds of situations done so the larger social impact can be measured. But, it's not only social impact and there may be financial impacts -- such as the need for this woman to go to a hospital, and now the examination of her medications. All of that costs money, and it's likely money that the taxpayer is shouldering the bill for...no matter what country it is happening in.

I haven't used sar in over 10 years. I used to use it to monitor resource usage of jobs that I was running while I was at work. Now that I look back, I was using isag (no longer maintained) to generate reports for me.

I would think it should be possible to package ksar in an appimage or docker container - but I don't know if one exists.

But - there is a newer option:

sadf -g your_datafile [ -- sar_options ] > output.svg

This is part of the sysstat package - no need to install anything else, and no java. sadf allows you to make graphs that you can view in your browser. Check the man file for sadf for more information. (Can't comment any further on this since I haven't used it.)

If you haven't heard this before: you're welcome. If you have heard it before: you're welcome. :)

So, what's everyone doing now that the competition is over? Do you have plans for your novel?

Personally, I've set mine aside for a little bit. I am: (a) looking for a better software solution (Sokio - I'm looking at Obsidian + Longform now...), (b) doing some research before I move forward (while I don't want to do hard SciFi, I want my novel to feel like a potential reality), and (c) obviously there are the upcoming holidays which means other stuff going on.

I'm hoping to get back to my novel by the end of the year, and have a real draft written sometime early next year.

So, would anyone be interested in having a β€œcompetition” based around journal writing. My thought is that I always intend to start keeping a journal at the beginning of the year. And, I do it for a few days, before setting it aside as something that I just don’t have the time for.

If you are in a similar situation, how about having a competition starting on January 1st, 2026? This would be different from the Novel Writing competition. My proposed guidelines are fairly simple: 100 pages in 31 days.

What is a page? That’s somewhat subjective, but I’d say that should be at least an A5 sheet of paper (148 x 210 mm). Word count should be ~350 words per page.

You can use whatever you want: a paper journal, an eInk device, or any other note-taking device. (Phone, tablet, computer, whatever).

If there’s enough interest, I’ll set up a leader board in TrackBear where we can track our progress, and schedule an event for the community.

(Note: this is a re-post. I didn't realize that polls won't federate to Lemmy... So, please "vote" below with a comment.)

While there are still a few hours to go, I wanted to say thank you to everyone who participated in this first FediWriMo.

The image in this post is the certificate that participants are receiving upon completion of the competition.

(Aside: I would schedule this post to go out at midnight CST like have for all the others, but it appears that Lemmy instances were seeing the posts before they were scheduled...so no point in scheduling this one.)

So, here it is, the final leader board post of the 2025 FediWriMo competition:

# Participant % of Goal Total Versus Par Last Update
1 Unattributed 119.31% 59,656 +16,322 2025-11-26
2 Just Jess 102.02% 51,010 +26,010 2025-11-15
3 umbraroze 100.48% 50,242 +5,242 2025-11-27
4 Adubya 98.10% 49,048 +714 2025-11-29
5 Mugita Sokio 96.68% 48,341 +7 2025-11-29

So, this is it... The final day. Get your final counts posted, and then take a break, you've earned.

Let's talk about what we've accomplished this month. Look back on our struggles, and our achievements. You've come a long way in thirty days!
