Just got a job that is fully remote, and I think I need to start doing this a few times a month. I could do a half day at a local happy hour or something. It's oppressively lonely as is.

I'm referring to / summarizing the Ratchet Effect.

Obviously movement for the sake of movement is not inherently good. But when our only allowed form of action is to vote and we see that voting has no or negative effect, it seems fruitless.

Because a slightly more realistic scenario is that the Dems vote to just throw some people off the cliff, and that's agreed between the two parties.

No, I'd rather vote for vegan ice cream first, then vote against driving off a cliff.

Unfortunately our current system doesn't allow for that, so obviously I vote against driving off a cliff, but it feels so stagnating.

Agreed, but this is like comparing your neighbor burning 1 million acres to you having a bonfire. The scale is the problem. We should absolutely take individual responsibility; however, our small impact is only felt when we band together.

I counted the boxes and compared to the number of digits.

Yep, we had a "targeted political attack" in Brooklyn Center (a 2nd ring suburb of Minneapolis) about 2 hours before the protests were set to start.

What a despicable way to respond to a well reasoned and compassionate comment.

I get that inner reflection is difficult, I really do. But if someone's message hits you in a particularly poignant way, responding with cruelty just doesn't seem helpful for anyone involved. I hope you're able to grow past it and hold a mirror to yourself.

The Minneapolis City Council on Thursday approved an ordinance that would prohibit landlords from employing algorithms to set rent and vacancy rates.

The proposed ordinance would specifically ban the use of algorithms that use “non-public competitor data.” It passed by an 11-2 vote.

Wonsley said many of the corporate property management companies that use this technology operate student housing complexes around the University of Minnesota. College students are “particularly vulnerable to exploitation,” she said, because they’re often first-time renters who are constrained to living near campus.

I'm not like one of those weirdos that just kills for no reason. I shot that dolphin right in its wet brain and I loved it. In fact, my pleasure from doing so was higher than my vegetarian friend's when they ate a whole block of cheese.

Right now, there's $20k being offered for information about me, but I think that's dumb. I tried to go to the FBI with information about a trophy hunter and the local butcher, but the special agent said he wouldn't give me any money for that and they already knew about it. He did offer me a bacon-topped doughnut on the way out though!

Edit, dang this is very different than Reddit's vcj.

Republicans have at long last elected a House speaker: Representative Mike Johnson, a fundamentalist Christian who was alsoem once called a key “architect” in Congress’s efforts to overthrow the 2020 election.
