platforms dont have a moral obligations to host opinions it is one thing when someone says something sane but unpopular and gets themselfs booted thats not good however extremist opinions such as nazism have no place on a decent platform look at what happened to voat and basically every other platform promoting free speech people who got booted off moderated platforms go there to spread their hate and destroy the site

true but its easy to set up quickly so pros and cons

[-] fishy_2_0@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

im pretty neutral on it maybe theres a god maybe there isnt doesnt make a difference me people can believe what they want as long as its not actively harming them or others

they have moderators but the situation was just that bad and keep in mind moderators are volunteers and you cant just assign anyone to it either and when given the choice of keep moderator and admin time from other important issues or simply do something about the problem they chose the second its not an ideal solution but it is a solution

Honestly this is too extreme the problems werent with the instances themselfs it was that a lot of users from over there were overwhelming the moderators and admins and something had to be done in the end the defed was chosen because it is the only option currently provided by lemmy if you look into the comments you can see that the admins dont want to push the big red defed button but thats the only option they have this issue isnt black and white

They said in the post that this is because of inssuficient mod tools a Mastodon for instance is far better in that regard but even then when it exploded instances blocked mastodon.social and other due to moderation concerns once the reddit wave is given time to settle down and better tools are made available i think they will refederate with those instances

[-] fishy_2_0@beehaw.org 20 points 1 year ago

Defederating means that you as the user cannot interact or see comunities on those instances from this one and would need another account on a instance that is federated with them

[-] fishy_2_0@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago

it gets deleted and you would need to sign up to another instance

[-] fishy_2_0@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago

not that big a shock if you consider the amount of work it is to moderate that kind of thing reddit has shittons of money to make sure illegal things are not on the site unlike instances here that run on donations
